About Nathan

Bio

I teach science and math topics. I can help you understand very difficult topics, concepts, and methods. I do my best to make these quantitative subjects easy to swallow; I've received numerous standing ovations for my lectures at Columbia University. So I know I can help you with whatever difficult topic you are facing.

Hello! My name is Nathan and I look forward to getting to know you. The first time I was paid to tutor was in 2011, but I've been helping my sisters and classmates in school since 2005. I have tutored with Kumon and C2 Education and have taught math and science to students ranging from elementary school to undergraduates. I have even taught students trumpet in Japan. I have a high school degree from the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, ranked 8th in the nation in 2014, and I am a graduate of Columbia University with a computer science major.

I love to share my passion for learning with the world, so I love to teach! I like to listen to others, and I try to keep my lessons fun. I am flexible; if you want to improve your grades for a particular test, we can work on that, or if you want to build a lasting relationship where I can teach you mathematics up to calculus, we can work towards that. I firmly believe that education can help a person mature in many ways. For instance, my physics professor Brian Cole encouraged his class to work together on homework together, and I made many friends from the experience. I also learned the material better by having to explain it to others, and I think teaching someone how to do something is the surest sign that you understand it yourself.

But enough about me. What do you want to learn? What are your goals? I'd love to help you achieve your dreams, but you have to tell me what they are first. Shoot me a message even if you just want to chat. I love seeing other people's passions and helping them grow. That's why I find teaching rewarding.
I look forward to getting in touch!

Piano

Piano

I have played piano since 1998, and I have taught many students. I attend Columbia University and have been tutoring various subjects since 2005. My teaching philosophy is that each student learns best when they feel motivated, and in piano this is fairly easy to achieve; we play songs that are fun for students, and I always give them an end goal to shoot for. Moreover, I listen to students and give them some control over lessons so they feel agency and ownership of their experience. I try to provide more positive feedback than negative feedback so a student gains self-confidence; this tends to help a student's motivation as well. They work harder to learn material when they feel like they can do it. I believe each person has incredible potential, and I love seeing them realize their goals. This is why I am a tutor.

Patient and dedicated

Nathan has a genuine gift. He is very focused and has the ability to connect in a way that doesn't come naturally to just anyone. My daughter was able to comprehend in one session, what she struggled with for a while. I was definitely impressed!

Great, knowledgeable tutor

Nathan helped my daughter understand the difference between scalars and vectors in order to help her understanding of 2-D motion. I believe that after his help, she will do very well on her physics quarterly. He gave common-day examples of physics problems, making it much easier for my daughter to understand. He traveled a long ways to get to us in New Jersey, demonstrating his passion to help. Overall, great tutor!
