Hello, my name is Altaf! I graduated as the valedictorian in high school and earned a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Delaware with a minor in Biochemical Engineering. I have 4+ years of online tutoring experience through a platform called TakeLessons, where I mainly tutored high schoolers. Additionally, I have experience with in-person tutoring local to my college.
Throughout my time in college, I observed that I learned best in active environments. Environments that feel one-sided (i.e., teachers who lecture to a "brick wall") did not work for me, and I believe that style of teaching is not how most students learn. When I tutor, I encourage an open environment where students are free to interrupt and ask questions, as I would rather confusion be solved early rather than propagate throughout the lesson. Additionally, I encourage and welcome mistakes; I will never be condescending towards students, but instead ask guiding questions to allow them to think of the correct solution themselves, as opposed to giving the answer. ChatGPT is a tool that can "give the answers" nowadays, so I feel that it is my goal to improve the understanding of the material for my students to enable success in high-pressure situations (e.g., quizzes and exams).
I specialize in tutoring chemistry and math. Being a chemical engineer, I often enjoy implementing real-world examples into my lessons to make my lessons more "tangible" to inspire students and emphasize the importance of the learning content.
I'd like to describe myself as a very down-to-earth person. I'm easy to talk to and observant of student needs, allowing me to personalize my lessons. Please feel free to contact me with questions or to book a lesson!

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

As a PhD student in a highly quantitative STEM field, I have a deep understanding of algebraic foundations and years of experience helping students strengthen their math skills. I focus on making Algebra 1 concepts—equations, inequalities, graphing, functions, and word problems—clear, logical, and approachable. My students benefit from step-by-step breakdowns, targeted practice strategies, and intuitive explanations that build both confidence and long-term mastery. Whether you are catching up, building foundational skills, or preparing for higher-level math, I tailor sessions to meet you exactly where you are and help you improve quickly.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have extensive experience tutoring mathematics at high school and college levels! My engineering background gives me a deep, intuitive understanding of Algebra 2 concepts, allowing me to break them down into simple, clear steps that actually make sense. I can help you finally "get" math, many of my students in the past have had great improvements in their grades and understanding! I have worked with students of all skill levels, including those who struggle with confidence, test anxiety, or foundational gaps. My sessions focus on building strong problem-solving habits, strengthening algebraic intuition, and ensuring students improve grades quickly and consistently.
Biochemistry

Biochemistry

I am a PhD student in Bioengineering at Georgia Tech with extensive hands-on experience in molecular biology, protein chemistry, gene delivery, and cell-based assays. I have conducted research in multiple biochemistry-focused labs, including MIT. My teaching style focuses on breaking down dense biochemical concepts—enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways, protein structure, gene regulation—into intuitive, visual explanations that students actually remember. Whether you're preparing for exams, struggling with foundational biochemistry, or aiming to excel in a pre-med or engineering curriculum, I can help you build deep understanding and high test performance quickly. My research experiences mean that I have taken biochemistry concepts and applied them in real-world scenarios, so I understand them quite well!
Biology

Biology

I am a PhD student in Bioengineering at Georgia Tech with extensive experience teaching and tutoring college-level Biology, including serving as a TA for biology courses. My research background spans molecular biology, cell biology, gene delivery, and biochemical systems, giving me a deep understanding of the concepts students find most challenging. I specialize in breaking down complex biological topics—cell signaling, genetics, metabolism, microbiology, physiology—into clear, intuitive explanations that build long-term understanding. Whether you're preparing for exams, catching up on course content, or aiming for an A, I provide structured, personalized guidance that helps students rapidly improve performance and confidence.
Calculus

Calculus

Having a bachelor's in Chemical Engineering and pursuing a PhD in Bioengineering, I have extensive experience applying calculus to advanced engineering and research problems. I help students master limits, derivatives, integrals, optimization, related rates, and the conceptual reasoning needed for success in Calculus I, II, and III. My explanations focus on intuition and strategy, so students learn how calculus truly works rather than memorizing steps. Whether you're preparing for exams or strengthening fundamentals, I provide clear, structured guidance tailored to your needs.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have a Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering from a top 5 institution in the USA (University of Delaware), where chemistry was a core part of our education. I specialize in helping students master difficult topics like thermodynamics, chemical bonding, equilibrium, kinetics, and electrochemistry by breaking them down into simple, intuitive steps. Whether you're preparing for a high school exam, college chemistry course, or pre-med prerequisites, I provide structured guidance that rapidly improves understanding and confidence.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I bring enthusiasm and real scientific experience into every session to help younger students develop curiosity and confidence in science. As an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and Georgia Tech PhD student, I have a strong background in biology, chemistry, physics, and scientific problem-solving. I specialize in making science engaging and understandable through hands-on reasoning, relatable explanations, and supportive instruction. My goal is to help students build a strong foundation while actually enjoying what they learn.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

My writing is a major reason I am where I am today — it helped me earn the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, gain admission to Georgia Tech’s PhD program, and secure a highly selective research position at MIT. I understand exactly what committees look for, how to frame your experiences with impact, and how to turn your story into a compelling argument for acceptance. Based on experience, the writing style in college and science is incredibly different from what is taught in high school. Whether it's writing a college application or a fellowship application, I can help you become a better composer of personal statements to help you achieve your goals!
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have a strong foundation in math instruction at all levels. I specialize in helping students build confidence with essential pre-algebra skills like fractions, integers, equations, and problem-solving. My teaching style focuses on breaking down concepts into approachable steps and ensuring students truly understand the “why,” not just the procedure. If your student needs a patient, clear, and encouraging guide through foundational math, I can help them make rapid progress.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I help students build the algebra, trigonometry, and function-based reasoning essential for success in precalculus and beyond. As a PhD student at Georgia Tech with strong mathematical training, I excel at making challenging concepts like trigonometric identities, exponential/logarithmic functions, and polynomial behavior more intuitive. Students appreciate my step-by-step breakdowns and ability to connect abstract ideas to real applications. My goal is to strengthen confidence and ensure students are fully prepared for calculus.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I earned a perfect score on the SAT Math section, an achievement that opened the doors for me to attend Georgia Tech, conduct research with collaborators at MIT, and receive recognition from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Because I’ve mastered the test at the highest level, I understand exactly how the SAT thinks, where students get stuck, and what strategies truly move scores. My teaching focuses on breaking down complex problems into simple, repeatable steps that any student can learn. If you want a tutor who has walked the path and can show you how to replicate elite-level results, I can get you there.

Patient and Able to Join on Much Short Notice

When reviewing for final exams in college I wasn't sure if I could get in with a tutor before my final, having reached out to a different one prior and not being able to get with them. Thankfully Altaf was able to join after being notified only an hour prior and was able to patiently and skillfully review the concepts learned throughout the course through examining practice exam questions. Thanks to this I was able to feel more confident for the exam and relearned and reviewed a plethora of concepts in such a short amount of time which helped a lot for the exam.
