Hello! My name is Yvonne. I'm currently able to take on new pupils!

Some information about me: I've taught English for 8 years. I am a certified teacher in the state of Maryland. I received my Master's degree in Secondary English Education at Johns Hopkins University. I’m comfortable utilizing online platforms to provide structured lessons, both asynchronously and synchronously, as well as communicating immediate or timely feedback. I've been fortunate enough to teach every grade level in secondary school (middle through high school). I have taught students with special needs, honors students, gifted and talented students, English language learners, and students who belong to non-English speaking households.

I can help pupils with most things related to listening, reading, and writing; however, I'm most frequently asked to assist in essay-writing, research projects, homework completion, preparations for assessments, practicing the language, and applications.

If you'd like to know more about me or would like to begin discussing a tutoring plan, please feel free to reach out and message me on Wyzant. (I will not be accepting offers for in-person tutoring.) To best utilize your time, please provide the following details in your message:

*Areas for growth: Content, subject matter, or skills you or the student is struggling with
*Grade-level and schooling (i.e. public, private, home school...)
*Conditions (such as special needs or exceptionalities): Anything I should know about to better accommodate you, or the student’s needs
*The length of time and frequency you would like to reserve sessions

Approved Subjects

English

English

My interest in the content area (English) probably originates from my very early schooling, and my own personal interests. My experiences as an undergraduate studying English, Women & Gender Studies, and Educational Studies, however, has given me the tools, and therefore the confidence, to guide others. I believe every single person should be given the opportunity to critically read and confidently express themselves--regardless of ability, race, or gender.
Grammar

Grammar

During my graduate studies, I conducted independent research on grammatical subject knowledge--especially in relation to English Language Learning. With more experience in the teaching field, I have come to realize that grammatical knowledge is an invaluable asset to students. It's encouraging for students to find that any language, including English, is made up of "predictable patterns."
Literature

Literature

I've always been an avid reader. I mean, I even grew up across from a library. There are few classics I haven't read, and even fewer that I'm not at all familiar with. I believe a love of literature is important to instill in the young, especially. A great portion of my undergraduate studies has been literature intensive. Although, I'm familiar with canonical works, I think reading outside of the canon is just as important to developing critical reading skills.
Proofreading

Proofreading

During both my undergraduate and graduate studies, I proofread and edited a considerable amount of papers--not all of which were mine, I might add. Although I can proofread papers via email, I find that it is sometimes difficult to assist individuals without effective communication. Therefore, depending on the level of proofreading a student needs, I like to have an open communication way (such as a telephone line, Skype call, messenger chat) open to understand fully what the student is trying to express. I can also edit over a draft, scribble in the margins or add comments on word documents, if that is preferable to the student.
Reading

Reading

Both my experience as a English (Literary Studies) and Women & Gender Studies double major has provided me many opportunities to refine my critical reading skills. However, as someone who enjoys reading, I think reading should be as personal as it is academic. I thoroughly believe those who don't take joy in reading haven't found the right lens through which to read, yet.
Spelling

Spelling

I believe spelling is a skill which can easily be improved on...when exposed to the right resources and introduced to a study method compatible with the student. In one respect, I'm experienced as an undergraduate English major, because I've had to teach myself new ways to acquire vocabulary, and thus, spelling skills. In another respect, I'm experienced because I've assisted friends and siblings with their spelling skills.
Writing

Writing

Writing--comparable to solving equations in your head, writing can be difficult if one doesn't practice. I've been writing and researching for years, and although that experience places me in a position to help others, I don't believe anyone person can be a true authority on how to write "correctly." Rather, I offer you my step-by-step process to approaching different papers, which is not necessarily prescriptive. For instance, I believe finding one's writing voice is imperative to efficient writing...but I can't tell you what voice to use. Instead, I would explain the methods behind finding my writing voice, and guide you through the process.
