Communication effectiveness is a vital skill in our personal lives, education, careers, and roles as citizens in a democratic society. As we aspire to greater heights in our endeavors, the need to improve our communication practices becomes crucial.
I have witnessed the value of being a strong communicator personally, as a state champion in impromptu speaking in high school, the winningest debater in intercollegiate history, and higher education executive. My students have ranged from middle school novices to accomplished litigators and c-suite executives. I have helped them become more effective speakers, debaters, negotiators, and leaders.
My approach to mentoring others is to take them where they are and provide a program designed to take them where they want to go. You can expect me to spend a bit of time understanding some of your starting points, perceived challenges, and desired outcomes. Based on that, and my own experience, I will suggest options for how we might work together. I will then deliver a customized approach to developing your potential as a communicator and supporting you in achieving your goals.

While my career has been focused on higher education, my knowledge, skills, and experience are directly transferable to any business. My creativity, innovativeness, and resourcefulness enabled me to significantly improve organizational performance, even without having funds to invest. In each of my leadership roles we increased revenue and growth, developed and delivered innovative new programs, added services and value for clients, improved salaries and benefits for employees, created and improved facilities, and implemented new technology and strategic planning processes—all while reducing expenses. My leadership skills were honed during the Great Recession, and its aftermath, and further developed during the pandemic. I am skilled at envisioning win/win proposals, articulating them effectively, moving process with due speed, and achieving timely, positive results. I excel at addressing complex and competing demands and manage multiple projects effectively.

Debate

I am the winningest debater in the history of intercollegiate debate. I have coached champions and top speakers at both the high school and college levels in multiple debate formats. I have coached at the University of Kansas, University of Southern California, Occidental College, and the Claremont Colleges as well as numerous high schools. I have taught at numerous summer debate workshops including USC, UCLA, Berkeley, Stanford, Kansas University, Baylor University, Georgetown, and the University of North Carolina.

I have been a university executive in multiple positions, including 4 deanships and 2 presidencies. To accomplish this, I have extensively studied the interviewing process and interviewed dozens of times for high level positions. In my various roles, I have interviewed hundreds of individuals and helped scores of interviewees prepare for their interviews.

I have taught public speaking and coached student speakers at the high school, university, and professional level for over 20 years. My teaching experience includes 8 years at Claremont McKenna College and 12 years at Loyola Marymount University, where I earned the position of full professor. I earned a Masters degree in Communication Studies at the University of Kansas and my Ph.D. in Communication Arts and Sciences at the University of Southern California. My students/clients have ranged from C-suite executive, lawyers, and government and elected officials to novices in middle and high school.
