While in college I tutored students in the Business department in Finance and Accounting. I have been tutoring math online for a tutor platform for 6 months at the elementary school level. I feel that my diverse background and experiences have allowed me to connect with and get my students excited and more confident about math. I use several tools like drawings, number mats, and tens and ones blocks to demonstrate each math concept in a simple manner. I break down problems into smaller numbers and simple steps to highlight the cumulative principles of math and stress visualization of each concept. I use real world examples to connect with students often using coins and dollar bills in addition and subtraction. I believe the best results are produced when students combine a thorough understanding of math concepts with some old fashioned repetition and memorization. I emphasize with my kids how math has helped me succeed in life and how being great at math will allow them to have exciting successful lives! I am an avid sports and music fan and enjoy the outdoors. I often use those interests to relate to my students. I stress to my kids that math is consistent and reliable! In a world that has so many changes and unexpected issues ..... they can rely on MATH to be unchanged .... 2 + 2 will always equal 4! Today, tomorrow and 50 years from now! Once you learn math ... it is yours forever, you own it, no one can take it away from you and you can use it to your advantage!
