Chemistry can be a challenging subject for many students due to the conceptual nature of the material. However, once it has been mastered, it can be fun. I am a firm believer that there are no "stupid" questions. Instead, it is a matter of students not completely grasping the material and I encourage them to ask as many questions as necessary until they understand the concepts being covered. Chemistry can be a challenging subject for many students due to the conceptual nature of the material. However, once it has been mastered, it can be fun. I am a firm believer that there are no "stupid" questions. Instead, it is a matter of students not completely grasping the material and I encourage them to ask as many questions as necessary until they understand the concepts being covered. My goal as a tutor is to help students understand how chemistry relates to their lives since introductory courses can come across as boring.

I like to use analogies to help explain difficult concepts, and I try to lead students to discover the answer on their own rather than simply providing them with answers to the problems they are working on. Sometimes this will require backing up to review a concept covered earlier in the class in order to master current material. My objective is for students to understand the "why" aspect of the subject instead of simply memorizing facts. If students understand how a concept works, they can apply that knowledge to related problems and solve them on their own, which leads to greater understanding of the subject and fewer mistakes on quizzes and exams.

I have taught and tutored general chemistry & organic chemistry for more than ten years. Unlike most tutors, I have worked as a practicing research chemist for ~25 years. In addition I am a licensed chemistry teacher, having completed my student teaching in a college prep chemistry classroom. This unique combination means that I KNOW the subject area, can RELATE concepts to "real world" applications, and UNDERSTAND how to help students improve their mastery over the subject. I can also help students with their lab-related questions since I am a practicing research chemist.

  • Rate details: There is a 1 hr. minimum meeting fee. Tutoring beyond 1 hr. will be billed on a prorated basis. Cancellation requires 4 hrs. advance notice or the session will be billed for 1 hr. time.
