About Ricardo

If you want to understand the present, more often than not it is a good idea to study the past and witness how today's circumstances came to be. It was this kind of thinking and curiosity about the present that initially brought me to the study of History, a discipline I have come to love and that has helped me understand the world we live in.

As a lifelong student of History, I understand how it can be difficult at times, if not always, to appreciate the joy and fascination that History can bring to people. Regretfully History has a reputation to be a dry and boring subject, which it can be if it is only taught as a series of dates and names that succeed one after the other.

It is my hope that I can show students how learning about History can be fun and interesting, especially for those who do not consider History to be among their strongest subject.

I have ample experience studying history formally through higher education and informally through continuing self study. I am currently in Georgetown University completing my masters in history with a focus in Colonial Latin American history, even so in the past I have studied European and Global History. As such I am familiar with various strands of History and complementary disciplines such as Geography, Classics and Anthropology.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have taken over half a dozen college-level classes concerning Anthropology. During my early career in college, I flirted with the idea of changing my major to anthropology from history because of my interest in the subject. Among the classes I completed were biological and cultural anthropology, as such, I am familiar with the basics of Anthropology and can teach students what they may need.

Classics

My undergraduate focus was Medieval History and Medieval Studies. As such we were expected to study the classical texts of literature, philosophy and government that were the foundation of Medieval Society. Because of this I am familiar with the Classics and Classical Studies to the extent where I can help students understand this subject.

Political Science

During my undergraduate studies I registered in and passed over four political science classes. Among the classes that I completed I was especially interested in global and comparative political science. As such I am familiar with the basic systems of government and can help students better understand the subject. Furthermore I have continued to study Political Science through books concerning ideology, current events and political theory.

Religion

I have taken over half a dozen college-level classes concerning Religious Studies and Theology. Among them World Religions, Medieval Christian Theology, in-depth Daoism, among others Furthermore I have continued to study world religions in the context of history for my own enjoyment and enrichment, as such I am familiar with most of the basic tenets and history of Global Religions.
