I hold an M.A. in Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition, specializing in teaching German and Russian as foreign languages (Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, Moscow; Goethe Institute).

Over the years, I have guided professionals in improving communication skills for international work, and helped students prepare for university exams, and language proficiency tests such as the DLPT, ACTFL OPI, and ILR-based assessments at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI).

My lessons are interactive, engaging, and tailored to your goals. I cover all aspects of language learning—pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, listening, reading, and fluent speaking—using up-to-date authentic materials, multimedia tools, and modern teaching methods. We can also work with your own textbooks and materials if you prefer, so the lessons fit your needs and learning style.

I am a professional teacher of German, having received an M.A. in teaching German as a foreign language at one of Russia’s top-notch linguistics universities and research centers. I love helping people become immersed in the German language and gain an understanding of it since it is the key to a magnificent culture and, to a large degree, to Central Europe as a whole. As an individual tutor, I taught high school students who were getting ready to take their entrance examinations for admittance into the linguistics departments at Russia’s leading universities. Many of my students now have successful careers as professors, translators, journalists, and managers in multinational corporations. Last year two of my students passed their DaF tests (German as a foreign language test for admittance to German universities) and were admitted to the Vienna University of Economics and Business. In a Russian pedagogical university, I taught German to freshmen, sophomores, and third-year students for 10 years. Besides teaching, I developed teaching methodologies for classes designed to improve students’ spoken and written German. I was chosen to be in an international delegation for an educational exchange to Germany with the goal of subsequently implementing international educational standards. Besides all this, for 9 years I worked as a translator in Moscow in the office of a major German equipment manufacturer, and have hands-on, real-world experience participating in the everyday life of a German corporation – along with participating in international conferences in Dusseldorf, Cologne, and Munich. I prefer using textbooks and multi-media materials published by the leading German publishing houses Hueber Verlag, Klett Verlag, and Schubert Verlag, that have been endorsed by the Goethe Institute and Fridrich-Schiller University, Deutsche Welle materials, and also those which I developed.

I am a native-born Russian who has an M.A. in linguistics and over 12 years' worth of overall professional teaching experience. Being very familiar with the teaching methods used to teach Russian as a foreign language, I employ a wide range of techniques to make a complicated language both understandable and fun to learn. My experience includes teaching Russian in a multinational French construction company as well as teaching Russian in the foreign languages department at a pedagogical university in Russia. Here in America, I have been teaching Russian to many government workers, from total beginners up to advanced speakers, as well as preparing them to take Russian proficiency tests for various goals.

Structured and Immersive

Irina provides me with the most immersive learning environment possible without traveling to a Russian speaking country. This is exactly what I need and want from a teacher. She will take time to get to know you and what your goals are to build a plan specifically for you. I've attended a language school in the area on two different occasions and had several tutors. Excellent first lesson

Had an excellent first lesson! Irina Nikolaevna was able to take into account the bit of Russian I already know and build a lesson plan around it. She also speaks German, which I speak a bit more than Russian and use examples from German linguistics to explain Russian concepts. She even has homework for me between lessons, which is what I was hoping for!!
