My first official job out of college was with the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program in the Prince George’s County Public School District. This is a college-readiness course offered to students in elementary through high school. I was a tutor for a Middle School during the 2013-2014 school year. I was responsible for conducting tutorial sessions that underscore the principle of collaborative learning and the practice of students teaching other students through discussion of class and text notes, determined from student tutorial worksheets, notes, and discussions the concepts that need to be the focus of the tutorial sessions, assisted in teaching study skills and other aspects of college preparation, assisted students in any subject area, and communicated regularly with the AVID Elective Teacher/Coordinator regarding student progress and areas of concern.
Lastly, I was a writing center tutor for at Trinity Washington University. I was responsible for conducting tutorials on grammar usage, writing complete sentences, and helping to improve grades in core freshman English classes. This process of was rewarding because I was able to help students who really needed guidance with freshman composition. Also, I was able to make sure that every student got their hour with me and I made sure it counted.
I require a 24 hour notification policy and I also offer make up sessions on Thursdays between 12pm-4pm.
