Hello! My name is Patrick, and I am primarily a tutor for Science and Math, having received both my bachelor's and master's degrees in Biology. I have expert knowledge in the areas of ecology, evolution, genetics, and marine science, and I developed skills in coding/programming. My coursework and teaching have included cell biology, A&P, and virology. I am also able to help in several language subjects — English, Spanish, and Portuguese — as well as Psychology. In college, I minored in Spanish and was inducted into the National Foreign Languages Honor Society. I have learned Portuguese more recently, as my fiance is Brazilian. I also minored in Psychology in college, stemming from my parents being mental health professionals.

As an undergrad, I was hired as a Teaching Assistant, where I was largely responsible for addressing student questions on theory and lab procedure. I was also hired as a Peer Learning Group Leader, where I gained tutoring experience in conducting weekly review sessions for groups of ~10 students. As a graduate student, I had greater independence in my teaching responsibilities. I was responsible for teaching anywhere from 5-26 students at a time, which provided me with experience in time management and determining where more effort was needed on my part to properly facilitate learning. Overall, my tutoring/teaching experience has largely been at the college level, but I also have experience with tutoring high school students as well as adult learners either in small groups or 1-on-1.

In tutoring, I aim to be levelheaded, thoughtful, and lighthearted. Tutoring brings me great joy by unlocking student learning when perhaps a typical classroom setting has not done so. I find the required combination of intellectual stimulation, patience, and empathy extremely rewarding. I hope to help you and your loved ones with flexible & adaptive instruction, active listening, and an understanding of student obstacles.

Happy to discuss how I can be of assistance!

Biology

Biology

With a bachelor's degree in biology, I have a broad knowledge base across sub-disciplines – from cell and molecular principles, to physiological and biochemical topics, to ecological and evolutionary concepts. My master's degree provides deeper knowledge within ecology, genetics, and biotechnology, where I researched Hawaiian coral reef biodiversity using a new-age approach called environmental DNA. My coursework has included biostatistics, bioinformatics, cell biology, virology, anatomy & physiology, zoology, biogeography, and phylogenetics, among other classes.
Biostatistics

Biostatistics

I have taken multiple statistics-based courses throughout my undergraduate and graduate studies, including statistics for life sciences, mathematical biology, and R coding for biologists. I have taught a variety of introductory and upper-level college biology classes, where I was responsible for introducing students to descriptive and inferential statistics. I also used statistical methods frequently in my graduate research.
Chemistry

Chemistry

In completing a degree in biology, I have completed two semesters of inorganic chemistry as well as another two semesters of organic chemistry. I have also completed a course in Biochemistry.
Ecology

Ecology

In addition to a General Biology course dealing with ecology, evolution, and environmental science, upper-level courses in Vertebrate Zoology and Evolutionary Biology have included ecological concepts. Furthermore, field work in Brazil has offered me practical experience in ecology and conservation.
Environmental Science

Environmental Science

I have both a bachelor's and master's degree in biology, with a focus on ecology and environmental science. I worked for several years between my degrees as a research assistant in wildlife management, conservation science, and environmental public health. I recently completed a fellowship in environmental policy.
Physiology

Physiology

Throughout completion of my degree in biology, I have taken multiple courses devoted either entirely or partially to physiology. Besides two semesters of Human Anatomy and Physiology, my coursework in Virology, Vertebrate Zoology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry have made me proficient in physiology as a whole.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Although having completed Prealgebra in 7th Grade some 9 years ago, I have continued to use its principles through higher levels of math and even throughout my college coursework in biology.
Psychology

Psychology

With a minor in Psychology, I have completed coursework in General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Statistics for Life Sciences, Biological Bases of Behavior, and Abnormal Psychology.
Spanish

Spanish

With a minor in Spanish Language and Literature, I have gained conversational fluency through completing coursework in Spanish Conversation, Spanish Composition, Analysis and Interpretation of Hispanic Literature, and Spanish-American Civilization.
Statistics

Statistics

I have taken several undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, including Statistics for the Life Sciences, Mathematical Biology, and R Coding & Analysis. When teaching biology undergrads, I have instructed on introductory descriptive and inferential statistics. I have also used statistical analysis frequently in my graduate research.
