Hi! My name is Alexandra, a tutor based in the Washington, DC area. I specialize in math and science tutoring, and have over fifteen years of experience providing support with classwork at all grade levels, from elementary to intermediate-level college courses. In addition, I have been working as a test prep tutor for the last five years, specializing in tutoring the SAT, PSAT, ACT, and GRE and accompanying subject tests.

I have been tutoring since my sophomore year of college, when I began to work as a homework aide at the tutoring and support center in the Physics Department at Cornell. I found the work exceptionally rewarding, and enjoyed the challenge of explaining highly abstract concepts in ways that can be easily visualized and understood.

My style is quite flexible, and I try to adapt it to meet the student’s needs. My primary goal with students is to teach them to read and understand math and science problems and to build their confidence in their own problem-solving skills, so that they are eventually able to tackle their coursework on their own. To this end, I encourage my students to think through a problem on their own as much as possible, even as I remain present and available to provide guidance if they should need it. Math and science can be very overwhelming in terms of the amount of new material presented to students, so I aim to help my students feel supported and encouraged as they work.

The following is a representative (non-exhaustive) sample of the courses I have taught:

- algebra 1 and 2
- geometry
- trig/precalculus
- calculus and AP calculus (AB and BC)
- multivariable calculus
- differential equations
- linear algebra
- mathematical physics

- earth science
- life science
- biology
- chemistry and honors/AP chemistry
- physics and honors/AP physics (with and without calculus)
- mechanics
- electricity and magnetism
- thermodynamics
- optics
- waves
- modern physics (special relativity, quantum physics, etc.)

I do ask that each student let me know before our sessions begin the tit

Bible Studies

I have an MA and am pursuing a PhD in Semitic languages and literatures. For my coursework, I was required to complete over 20 credit hours in close readings and textual analysis of a variety of biblical genres (including prose, poetry, prophetic texts, and legal texts). I was also required to take a graduate-level seminar on the history of the land of the Bible, focusing on ancient Syria-Palestine.
Calculus

Calculus

I completed extensive coursework in upper level math for my physics undergraduate degree, and I have been tutoring all levels of calculus, as well as introductory differential equations, for over a decade.
Chemistry

Super smart and really helped

Alexandra tutored me in both Physics and Calculus and was very smart and helpful in both. I could understand her explanations and she is good at explaining hard concepts. My grades improved and even was able to take the AP Calculus exam.

Provides good explanations

Alexandra helped me prepare for the SAT Math II. She provided explanations to problems I did not understand and was really patient throughout everything. She helped me understand abstract concepts I previously could not wrap my head around. She is a great tutor!

Excellent Tutor!

Alexandra is very patient and has a knack for explaining physics and pre-calculus topics in a way that reinforces and expands our daughters in class learning. Alexandra patiently helps our daughter work through problems, with the right balance of encouragement and help to ensure understanding of the material. Since Alexandra has begun tutoring, our daughters grades, and confidence, have markedly improved. We highly recommend Alexandra - she is both a very effective tutor and a very pleasant and polite young lady.

Stress-less SAT Tutoring

I was so worried about the SAT Math section. To me, the terminology was like a foreign language. I was so overwhelmed! Alexandra's serene approach definitely lowered my stress level. As we worked our way through my book, I got more and more answers correct. Thanks to her I have a greater understanding of Math terms (ex: "reciprocal", "vertices"). I enjoyed working with her very much and I never dreaded having class. I plan to take the SAT this Saturday, hopefully everything will work out!

Professional and sweet.

Alexandra really knew what she was doing, she prompted me in the right direction and, in just one hour, made me feel a lot more comfortable with the material and confident for the next day's test. I will definitely call on her whenever I feel lagging behind.

Very patient, hard working and accommodating

Alexandra is a very patient, hard working and accommodating tutor. She is easy to work with. She explained both math and science (several levels of both) very clearly to our son and was able to get him engaged in the subject matter. We highly recommend her.

knowledgable and patient

Alex tutored my niece in the math portion of the ACT. My niece said she was "really smart and explained things slowly and perfectly." I would recommend Alex to anyone who needs assistance with math.
