I help students understand U.S. history and turn what they know into clear, evidence-based writing. My main focus is AP U.S. History, followed by AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP World History, and AP Human Geography. I also offer college application guidance, including personal statements and supplemental essays.

I hold a Ph.D. in history from Columbia University and have taught at Princeton University and the University of Connecticut. I spent seven years teaching high school in Washington, DC, including Honors U.S. History at Washington Latin and AP U.S. Government and Politics, AP Human Geography, U.S. history, government, and world history at Jackson-Reed. I am certified to teach secondary social studies in DC and have two to four years of informal tutoring experience.

In a session, we can clarify difficult course material, evaluate primary sources, or develop an argument for an essay. I start with the student's questions and a sample of their work to identify what needs attention. For AP preparation, I connect course content to document analysis and written responses. Students learn to explain why an answer works, not simply memorize it.

For college applications, I draw on experience teaching students before and after they enter college. I can help students choose a personal-statement topic, organize a draft, and revise for clarity and specificity. Students remain the authors: my questions and feedback help them express their own experiences in their own voice.

I welcome high school and college students seeking patient, substantive help with history, government, and writing. Tell me about your goals, current difficulties, and upcoming deadlines so we can plan a useful first session.
