I approach all tutoring sessions with a clear focus on test preparation, given that in most IB subjects 70-80% of a student's final grade is determined by exams. In the context of English this usually means looking at a past paper one or paper two exam and allowing the student to independently brainstorm for a couple minutes. After that, we discuss what they may have missed and practice synthesising their ideas into academic writing. I assign homework after each lesson, which is directly drawn from past exam papers. Working independently is essential in the IB, since the more time a student spends with exam style questions the more comfortable they will be during their mocks and finals.
