Dear Students,
My name is Erin! Music has been a central part of my life for many years, and I am excited to share that passion with students like you. I have been studying the flute for 17 years and teaching for about five of those years. In addition to teaching, I have also received the great honor of being selected as a performer for masterclasses such as the Marina Piccinini International Masterclass, the ARIA Summer Music Academy, and the Pender Island Flute Retreat. Recently, I graduated from the University of Washington with a Master’s degree in Music Performance, an experience that further deepened my understanding of both performance and pedagogy. Throughout my musical journey, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from inspiring teachers whose approaches have strongly shaped the way I now work with my own students.
My teaching philosophy focuses on building a strong technical and musical foundation while making music approachable and enjoyable. I draw heavily from the traditional French flute school, using materials such as Moyse tone studies and daily exercises by Taffanel and Gaubert to help students develop reliable technique, control, and a beautiful sound.
Breaking down and understanding music theory is also an important part of my lessons! We will build scales together, explore musical notation, and learn new rhythms each time we meet. My goal is to give students the tools they need not only to improve as flutists, but also to become thoughtful, confident musicians who understand the music they are playing.
