Hello, I’m Josh. Teaching has been a long-standing goal of mine, and after many years serving as a diplomat with USAID, I’m now making the transition into the classroom. From teaching my own classes in Mongolia as a Peace Corps Volunteer, to teaching ESL in Washington, DC, to mentoring and training colleagues throughout my federal career, I’ve always found the most meaningful part of my work to be helping others learn and grow. I’m preparing to begin a teacher residency program and am excited to support students one-on-one in the meantime.
I hold an MA in International Development from the University of Denver and a BA in Political Science from Albion College. In Mongolia, I taught grades 4 through 12, designing lesson plans and leading my own classroom. Teaching students across ages, language backgrounds, and ability levels strengthened my ability to make complex material clear, engaging, and accessible while building supportive relationships.
For more than 12 years with USAID, I trained and mentored professionals in writing, policy, and analytical work. My strengths in writing and civics/government are grounded not only in academic study but in real-world application. I regularly applied political and ethical concepts in international settings and wrote for diverse audiences — from technical staff to senior leaders — learning to communicate clearly, logically, and persuasively.
As a tutor, I focus on building both skills and confidence. I break challenging concepts into manageable steps, connect lessons to real-world examples, and adapt my approach to each student’s needs. My goal is not just improved grades, but helping students feel capable, prepared, and proud of their work.
