I'm Mike! I graduated cum laude with Bachelor's degrees in both English and philosophy, with a minor concentration in linguistics. I then went on to earn a Master's degree and then a Phd in philosophy. I'm now a professor at a university in Washington, DC. I was lucky to have many excellent and inspiring teachers in high school, college, and graduate school. I fell in love with teaching myself when I was a graduate student. My goal when teaching is always to help students cultivate skills that will be useful for them outside of academic study. In particular, I enjoy helping students become more skilled in reading, writing, discussion, and debate. I also try to make the material I teach accessible and fun.

I've been teaching since 2015. Most of my students have been college undergraduates, but I've also worked with junior high and high school students as part of the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth summer program. I've taught fifty-two college level courses. I've also been a teaching assistant for about two-dozen classes. I've taught classes on writing, philosophy, classics, religious studies, history, linguistics, and logic. I've worked very closely with individual students to help them succeed in my classes. Students' evaluation of my teaching has consistently been excellent and I can provide a portfolio of student comments about my teaching upon request.

I'm eager to help students improve their learning and expand their opportunities. I respond quickly to inquiries. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or to schedule a lesson!

Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I've taught 52 college-level courses, most of which involved a substantial amount of writing for students. I'm currently a professor in a university honors program, where I teach several sections of a writing-intensive seminar every fall that fulfills the university's undergraduate writing requirement. While teaching students content about philosophy and the humanities is an important goal for me, my priority as a teacher is always to help students cultivate skills that are useful outside of my class, to include writing.
Linguistics

Linguistics

Linguistics was my minor concentration as an undergraduate and I went on to study the philosophy of language and linguistics in graduate school. For my PhD thesis, I wrote about a question at the intersection of philosophy, linguistics, and psychology. My PhD thesis advisor is a professor in both the linguistics and philosophy departments at my alma mater. I've taught several college-level courses on the language sciences and I've published several peer-reviewed articles in linguistics.
Logic

Logic

I have taken several courses in logic at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I've been lead instructor for an introductory logic course on nine occasions. I've also been teaching assistant for the same course on several occasions, so I've had many opportunities to work one-on-one to help students learn about the study of argumentation.
Philosophy

Philosophy

BA, MA, PhD in Philosophy
Religion

Religion

I hold several advanced degrees in philosophy and have been able to carefully study and successfully teach the history of world religion. I've taught courses that address ancient Greek and Roman religion, Judaic studies, the early and medieval history of Christian thought, classical Arabic philosophy, early Buddhist history, Confucianism, and Daoism.
