Hi! I’m Maya, a current MD-PhD student at the University of Maryland with a deep passion for biology and a strong commitment to education. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with honors in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and have over six years of experience tutoring and teaching students at the middle school, high school, and early college levels.
My undergraduate and postbaccalaureate work have included extensive research in cancer biology and protein engineering, with multiple peer-reviewed publications and awards recognizing both academic achievement and scientific innovation. Just as meaningful to me as these accomplishments is the work I’ve done helping students build academic confidence in biology. My tutoring journey includes working one-on-one with high schoolers through programs like Educanspire, where I designed personalized study plans and learning materials to guide homeschooled students through the AP Biology and AP Chemistry curriculums. During the pandemic, I founded Youth Science Connection, a virtual summer camp that allowed students to complete hands-on STEM projects with guidance from college mentors. I’ve also taught courses through outreach programs like the Penn Educational Studies Program, Upward Bound Math & Science, and the Educational Pipeline Program. Most recently, during medical school, I’ve tutored Algebra I for middle and high school students.
As a tutor, I focus on more than just memorization. I help students truly understand the material, connect it to real-world applications, and develop critical thinking skills they can carry into college and beyond. I use visuals, analogies, and practice problems to make biology clear, engaging, and approachable.
If you're looking for a tutor who brings both advanced scientific knowledge and a student-centered teaching style, I’d love to support your learning journey!
