Hi there! I have been tutoring college-level statistics, calculus, and trigonometry/precalculus for more than 5 years now, and logic for about 2. I love making these subjects "click" for students, whether you're a high schooler taking rigorous IB/AP coursework or a college student figuring out career goals (or just slogging through a GE!!).

My sessions are conversations rather than lectures, grounded in whatever your particular needs are. I believe this to be the most helpful and intuitive approach to tutoring, whether you're seeking to go over and above in an advanced class or you're totally out of your depth in an unfamiliar subject.

Currently, I focus primarily on (1) entry-level logic, i.e. propositional and (first-order) predicate logic; (2) college and high school statistics from basic probability up to formal calculus-based definitions; and (3) all other high school math up to AP Calculus BC. That said, please feel free to reach out if you'd like to work together on another subject—high school physics, discrete math, and writing are all subjects I've tutored in the past.

Some background: I grew up near Sacramento, CA and completed my community college district's math curriculum with a 4.0 GPA while in high school. I earned a B.S. in Mathematics of Computation, with a Philosophy minor, from UCLA in 2024, and I currently have two academic papers pending publication. I received a score of 1530 on the SAT and a perfect score of 800 on the (now-discontinued) SAT level-2 mathematics subject test, and I am happy to help with test prep if desired.

I am currently based in the DC-Maryland-Virginia area with regular in-person availability in Bethesda, Rockville, Arlington, and DC; limited in-person availability elsewhere in the DMV; and regular availability virtually (message me for open timeslots). My rate is $60/hr for all new students. Thank you for taking the time to look at my profile, and please do reach out with any questions!

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I've taught calculus to students in the life sciences, physics, and engineering for over 5 years, and I hold a B.S. from UCLA in Mathematics of Computation. I earned A's in college calc I, calc II, multivariable calculus, and differential equations, and a 4 on the AP Calc AB exam in high school. If math is not your strong suit or something just isn't clicking, send me a message! I have a warm approach to tutoring that's helped all of my students both reach their target grade and feel more prepared for future classes. I'm happy to answer any questions!
Discrete Math

Discrete Math

From math to philosophy to argumentative writing in general, proof-writing is something I'm incredibly comfortable (and eager) working with students on—and it's in a discrete math class that proof techniques are usually introduced to STEM majors. I have ~5 years of experience introducing students to proof-writing, earned A's or A+'s in my own undergraduate logic/discrete structures coursework, and have an academic paper in algorithmic graph theory currently in review for publication.
Logic

Logic

I earned a B.S. in Mathematics of Computation from UCLA with a Philosophy minor concentrating in logic and philosophy of language. I earned an A+ in both of UCLA's symbolic logic courses, and I am a published researcher with formal proof-writing experience in mathematics and computer science in addition to philosophy.
Philosophy

Philosophy

I earned a B.S. in Mathematics of Computation from UCLA with a Philosophy minor, concentrating in formal logic. I have also written on topics in the philosophy of language, feminist metaphysics and epistemology, and medical ethics. I earned an A+ in both of UCLA's symbolic logic courses and am a published researcher with formal proof-writing experience in mathematics and computer science in addition to philosophy. My current interests are within cognitive neuroscience; they include learning and decision-making, self-concept, and the computational foundations of cognition and metacognition.

Excellent tutor

We had an excellent experience with Dane. My son needed help with high school Algebra 2. Dane asked for me to send some of his recent work. He reviewed it in advance of the session and then was able to walk my son through the places he was facing challenges. He explained things in a way that gave practical tips for my son to succeed.

Dane goes above and beyond and we highly recommend him.

Dane took the time to figure out my nephew's learning style and catered his sessions to help him understand the material. We were so pleased he did this because my nephew went from avoiding and checking out on the class to feeling motivated and putting him the time to understand the material. Dane catered the sessions to student's learning style which took some time and energy. Dane went the extra mile and we highly recommend his tutoring services.

Amazing Tutor!

After receiving tutoring from Dane, my test scores in AP Statistics improved by a lot. During lessons, he always takes the time to explain each concept to me thoroughly, and if I ever have any questions I feel comfortable asking them right away. His combination of visual and verbal instruction ensures that I walk away confident for my tests. He is very knowledgeable and is immediately able to identify common misconceptions that were causing me to be confused. Would highly recommend Dane!!

Amazing tutor!!

Dane has been helping me review AP Statistics since September 2024. He is very kind, patient, passionate and knowledgeable. He explains everything very clearly and concisely with various examples, and makes sure I understand. He is also very responsive when scheduling the time and date for lessons. I strongly recommend Dane!
