Bio

Hi, I'm August! I am currently a PhD student studying physics at GWU. My focus in nuclear physics and I have worked on experiments at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland and the Jefferson Lab National Accelerator in Virginia. I have been tutoring in various capacities since I was in high school when I volunteered as part of NHS and have worked for a couple private tutoring centers and STEM after school programs in the DC area since starting college.

Over the last five years I have tutored students of all ages in physics, calculus, and writing. In most recent tutoring position I worked specifically with neurodivergent students to help them with challenging material and in developing effective studying and time mangement strategies. When a student is stuck on a problem I try to walk students through it by breaking it down into small and easy to follow steps and/or showing them similar examples so they can learn the underlying method they need to use.

My academic experieces include: Algerbra I, Algerbra II, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics I & II, multivariable calculus, linear algerbra, and various college level physics and philsophy courses. I also teach SAT and ACT study strategies, I earned 1450 on the SAT. I find tutoring to be a rewarding experience and enjoy helping students learn new things. Many students think that they cannot do math or science, I believe that you can learn anything if you are taught wel!

Calculus

Calculus

I have experience in AP Calc BC, multivariable calculus, and linear algerbra.
Philosophy

Philosophy

I am currently earning a minor in philsoophy from GWU. I have taken a wide range of philosophy courses including environmental philosophy, ancient greek philsophy, and modern political philosophy. I am especially versed in collective ethics and Ancient Greek models of philosophical methods of living.
Physics

Physics

I majored in physics in college, with a focus on nuclear scattering processes, particle decays, and quantum mechanics. Course experience in AP Physics 1 and 2, Mechanics, Thermal Statistical Physics, Electromagnetics, Quantum Mechanics, Nuclear Physics, Optics, and applied lab work. I have also worked on two different lepton-proton scattering experiments to explore the structure of the proton.
Writing

Writing

I have taken several courses in writing scientific articles for a general audience and in peer reviewed journals, this involved editing other students work and learning from feed back on my own. I also have experience writing for my college newspaper, writing articles on student life and covering research developments at my university.

Helpful and knowledgeable

August was helpful with my teen with AP calculus AB, guiding her to explore how to solve problems on her own, rather than solving it for her. August also helped her understand one of the rules she didn’t understand from class.

Patient and thorough tutor

August went over the product rule and quotient rule with me and helped me understand it better than my teacher in school. August explained how the rules were derived and how they can be viewed as the same formulas written in different ways. This helped me remember them better by understanding not just how the formulas work, but why they do.
