James is a Washington, D.C.-based practitioner who has spent thirteen years at the intersection of Congressional affairs, politics, and advocacy. A former Congressional staff member (and later lobbyist), James served as the director of the Congressional engagement program at The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, where he developed and led an academic program to teach undergraduate students about Congress and the legislative. Through that program, he has helped thousands of students find their civic voice through personalized meetings on Capitol Hill with Members of Congress and legislative staff. Currently, he works with federal agency officials and members of the intelligence community to help them understand how Congress makes and debates policy.

Additionally, James conducts tailored advocacy trainings for nonprofits, frequently contributes programming for DC-based experiential learning organizations, mentors young people interested in government service, and writes about civic discourse and experiential education for democracy-building journals.

Career Development

Career Development

For much of my career, I've worked with young professionals to help build their careers, refine professional branding, and developing network skills. I teach these subjects at the Center for Strategic and International Studies' "Accelerator" program in Washington, DC. I can help with resumes, cover letters, networking, and personal branding.
College Counseling

College Counseling

For the last 13 years, I've served as a volunteer admissions counselor for my college. This includes interviewing students and learning more about their motivations and interests. I also help with essays, applications, and helping students do research on potential colleges / majors / faculty in whom they are interested. Plus I still keep in touch with some of my former mentees after they have been accepted!
Government & Politics

Government & Politics

I've working in and around Congress for well over a decade; first spending time working for a top-ranking Member of Congress, then as a nonprofit director where I taught students about Congress and the legislative process. In my career I have arranged and led over 1300 meetings with Congressmen, Senators, and their staff. I'm also a former lobbyist with extensive understanding of legislative action, House and Senate cultures, and effective advocacy.
