My name is John and I am a student at American University working towards my degree in Data Science. I have experience tutoring all levels of high school mathematics and am invested in the short and long term success of my students. My understanding of how mathematical concepts build on each other through high school results in elevated performance through high school and superior preparation for college math.
My tutoring experience began in high school where, from my sophomore to senior years, I tutored students in Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II with Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. I scored 790/800 in the Math portion of the SAT and attended the United States Air Force Academy for two years following high school. There, I successfully completed Calculus II & III while providing tutoring services for my squadron members in Calculus I. These years of experience have granted me a firm understanding of the necessary concepts to move through these levels of math, and proficiency in a variety of methods of communication.
My tutoring method is centered around active engagement with my students. This involves breaking each problem down into simpler questions and then piecing them together again to answer the larger question. By teaching this way, I keep the pace of lessons moving, preventing student disengagement and frustration with the material. This strategy's value grows as math becomes more complex and it becomes necessary to break problems down and then contextualize our answers.
