Bio

I received my Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University, where I studied math, journalism, and political science.

I have taught students as young as 12 and as old as 50 in algebra, trigonometry, pre-calc, and both AP and undergraduate calculus. I worked for two years as a teaching assistant for Northwestern in their single-variable calculus sequence, for which I graded assignments, proctor exams, held a weekly discussion section and office hours, and a guest lecture.

I was the champion of Connecticut College’s 2021 Integration Bee (a calculus tournament) and 2022 Math Olympiad (a proof-based tournament), and their representative in the Putnam Competition.

Through my work as a TA and a tutor, I have extensive experience in every aspect of the academic process. I know how these courses progress and how they’re graded.

My goal is always to help you build your own unique problem-solving toolkit. We'll often work through an example together, and I’ll explain how I think about each step along the way. Then once we’ve arrived at an answer, I’ll ask you to explain in your own words what we did and why we did it. That explanation becomes a written step-by-step blueprint to follow when we do the next problem.

To me, math problems are just puzzles to crack, with a million different possible approaches. That gives flexibility, and through our work you’ll build up your own logical process to solve these puzzles piece by piece, even when the underlying concepts are overwhelming.

I incorporate a variety of visual and interactive tools to keep students engaged, including a digital whiteboard that gives you permanent access to all our work. I’m certified to use IXL problem sets and study guides in sessions, and am always happy to send pointers and resources if you have questions between meetings.

My goal is for you to chart your own path through your work and to embrace your own of thinking. That way, you won’t just get the right answer, but you’ll actually be engaged and rewarded along the way.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have worked with dozens of students on both SAT and ACT test prep, as well as more than 800 hours tutoring math in general. I also received a 36 on the ACT myself, so I can help you optimize your time and find an efficient problem-solving approach that works for you.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I am a Northwestern University graduate and teaching assistant with extensive experience teaching every subject in the traditional math sequence. I earned a 36 on the ACT, a 5 on the AP Calculus BC, and an 800 on the SAT Math Level 2, and was the champion of two math olympiads (one proof-based and one calculus-based) organized by Connecticut College in 2021. I have hundreds of hours of experience in pre-algebra and algebra 1 and 2, and several hundred more in subsequent topics, all the way from pre-calculus to multivariable calculus, so I know how these classes progress and the skills that are needed to be successful long-term. As a TA, I taught students directly in my discussion section, held office hours, proctored tests, and graded assignments, so I’m very familiar with test-taking skills and strategies to maximize your homework grade.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I am a Northwestern University graduate and teaching assistant with extensive experience teaching every subject in the traditional math sequence. I earned a 36 on the ACT, a 5 on the AP Calculus BC, and an 800 on the SAT Math Level 2, and was the champion of two math olympiads (one proof-based and one calculus-based) organized by Connecticut College in 2021. Calculus

Calculus

I am a Northwestern University graduate with extensive experience teaching calculus. I have more than 700 hours of experience tutoring AP and undergraduate single-variable and multi-variable calc, and two years of experience teaching Northwestern’s single-variable calculus sequence as a TA. I was also the champion of the 2021 Connecticut College Integration Bee, an integral calculus tournament. Through these roles, I have an extensive track record of helping students not only understand the intricacies of calculus, but also building up the foundation beneath it (trig, algebra, and pre-calculus) as needed.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I am a Northwestern University graduate and teaching assistant with extensive experience teaching every subject in the traditional math sequence. I earned a 36 on the ACT, a 5 on the AP Calculus BC, and an 800 on the SAT Math Level 2, and was the champion of two math olympiads (one proof-based and one calculus-based) organized by Connecticut College in 2021. I have hundreds of hours of experience tutoring pre-calculus, and hundreds more in algebra, trigonometry, both AP and undergraduate calculus, and standardized test prep, so I know how these classes progress and the skills that are needed to be successful long-term. This insight is particularly important in a course like pre-calculus, which covers very many topics and can be overwhelming if you don’t know what to focus on. As a TA, I taught students directly in my discussion section, held office hours, proctored tests, and graded assignments, so I’m very familiar with test-taking skills and strategies to maximize your homework grade.

Awesome tutor

My son has been working with Coby for a while- initially on Algebra 2 and currently on Precalculus. Coby is very knowledgeable, knows how to teach, and is incredibly patient. My son not only learns a lot during each session, but actually enjoys them. His confidence has improved greatly. I highly recommend Coby.

Great interaction

Coby was kind and understanding to my lack of knowledge. Never made me feel bad for not knowing things. Had great explanations and really liked the technology he used to show me how to do things.

VERY good tutor!

If I had a question, Coby always has a solution that's understandable and to the point! And his consistent level-headedness/patience is also something that deserves mention. I'll be sure to keep him in mind for the math classes to come!

Knowledgeable & great communicator

Coby worked with both my kids and was extremely helpful and supportive. He's also prompt with responses and always follows up, which is not my experience with some others we've worked with. So glad to have found him!
