I have a PhD and an MA in German Studies from Stanford, as well as a BA in Germanic Languages & Literatures, a BA in Linguistics, and a BM in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan. I have 15 years of professional experience teaching German and 20 years of professional experience teaching piano, including music theory, at all ages and levels.

I have a PhD and an MA in German Studies from Stanford, as well as a BA in Germanic Languages & Literatures, a BA in Linguistics, and a BM in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan. I have 15 years of professional experience teaching German and 20 years of professional experience teaching piano, including music theory, at all ages and levels.

I taught all levels of collegiate German to Stanford undergraduates and graduate students for 7 years. After receiving my PhD, I taught all levels of German at an accredited college-prep high school for 6 years (AP-aligned) and worked at a German international school in the United States for 2 years (IB-aligned).

I specialize in AP German, which I have taught for 8 years. My AP German courses had an average pass rate of 91% (compared to the global pass rate of 67%), including 2 years with a 100% pass rate for the entire class. As an independent tutor, 100% of my students have successfully passed the AP German exam with a score of 5. I have been an AP exam reader for 4 years and have professional experience scoring all the AP German free response tasks. I was also a writer and editor for the multiple-choice selections on the most recent AP German sampler exam published by the College Board.

I use immersion techniques to teach all levels of German, from novice (absolute beginner) through advanced (third-year college level), and I employ similarly hands-on methods to teach written and aural music theory skills. I am comfortable teaching all ages, from grade school to adult learners, with a special emphasis on high school and college students. I give detailed feedback with a rapid turnaround time. I have a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. As a piano performance major, I took 7 semesters of collegiate music theory with a cumulative 3.94 GPA across all music theory courses. I have extensive knowledge of music theory, including written and aural music theory skills; keyboard theory and figured bass; jazz theory and composition; tonal music analysis; and 18th century counterpoint. I have been a private piano teacher since 2010, with an emphasis on practical music theory and technique since 2021. I have also written AP Music Theory exam prep questions, explanations, and drills, for a well-regarded online test preparation company.

Amazing Tutor - So Grateful I found her

Chiann was hands down one of the best tutors I've ever had. She was incredibly patient and an amazing teacher. She is extremely dedicated to teaching and went above and beyond to help me. Chiann didn't just help during our tutoring sessions; she also supported me outside of them. She assigned me practice work during the week and always had it graded before our next session. She has so many incredible resources and genuinely helps me make the most of them. She and knows the AP German curriculum inside and out and is the best AP German teacher out there.

Energetic, Efficient, and very friendly

Chiann is preparing my son for the AP German exam. So far she has been doing an excellent job. She was very quick to assess his level and to provide him with materials to fill in some of the gaps he has. Every lesson is very well planned, but yet not overwhelming. Chiann is very open to listening to the input from both the student and the parent. Communication with her is flawless both during and between lessons. We are very lucky to have found her. All in all an excellent tutor, beyond qualified to teach any level of German to any age group.

One of the best tutors I have ever had!

Chiann is one of the best tutors I have ever had in my life. I was a freshman Music Education major and I had(and still have to) to take many Music Theory classes as a result. I never had any Music Theory classes before college and was overwhelmed second semester by how hard it was, while trying to juggle other homework assignments and a musical. Since I was in musical rehearsals daily for my college right after choir and classes were ended for the day, I could not utilize the tutoring services provided by the school. Chiann was available whenever I needed her. She broke down concepts of theory in a way that I understood more clearly. Whenever I didn't understand, she found another way to explain it and was willing and ready to help me. She always encouraged me to keep trying. I went from an F in the class in March to a B in May. She was phenomenal and I will continue to use her help throughout my college career.
