Hello everyone! My official teaching and tutoring began well into my adult years. Since my childhood, I feel I have been in the role of a teacher. I grew up in a Dominican/Cuban household hearing and speaking Spanish, so even then, I taught my grandmother English while she taught me Spanish.
While working as a Center Director in afterschool programming in Washington, DC, I taught and tutored middle school students, for six years, in English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. I supported students in increasing their grades; so they could apply to top-tier high schools in the DC Metro Area. Before serving in DC, my hometown, I tutored students K-12 in North Carolina, in afterschool programming, and in low-performing schools with students experiencing learning challenges. Meanwhile, I also performed my duties as a Regional Manager and then as an educational State Director. I specialized in supporting Spanish-speaking families to be more at ease with the North Carolina school system, and I tutored their children in reading, writing, and math. Watching students gain confidence and take pride in their work brought me joy!
Currently, I will tutor teenagers and adults in Editing and ESL. I will support English-speaking or non-English-speaking adults to read AND comprehend what they read. This will spark confidence in their abilities and increase their writing ability. The tools I utilized with middle school and high school students will support tutoring adults. Also, I offer writing and revising papers with a student to help improve and expand their grammar and vocabulary levels. We will begin on a level that is comfortable for the student.
For ESL students, come as you are! We will start with a general conversation and proceed from there. Let us set goals and achieve them together!
