A graduate of Smith College (A.B.) and Oxford University (Ph.D.), I have twenty years of experience in teaching English literature and history to undergraduates at Oxford (UK) and The New School (NYC). At Oxford, where individualized tutoring is the norm, three-quarters of my students obtained either Firsts or Upper-Seconds (A and B+ averages ) on the subjects I taught. At the New School (where I teach presently), I have received excellent and superlative course evaluations and faculty observation assessments; in fact, in 2011, I was nominated for a Distinguished Teaching Award. During this period (2000-2019), my experiences in writing and editing have enhanced my skills in teaching essay writing: I have not only produced modern editions of two pre-20th-century novels and reviewed scholarly monographs, but also published a few peer-reviewed articles as well as pedagogical materials on history and literature. Not least, I have just completed a textbook on Thomas Paine's Rights of Man for Routledge and have recently been appointed as an advisory editor at Anthem Press and Manchester University Press.

So why am I tutoring on top of my regular teaching and editorial activities? Because I've come to realize that far too many students arrive at college without sufficient training: at least a third fail to write an essay that is both cohesive and compelling as well as grammatically and syntactically correct. There is, after all, only so much that any one teacher can do to help students learn how to construct an argument given the limitations of time and space. The fact is that the practice of good writing demands close attention and practice. It begins with learning how to craft a solid argument, provide pertinent examples, and arrange them strategically.

But good essay writing doesn't end there. Many students--and sometimes even literature instructors themselves--are too frequently prone to writing drab sentences with little variety in structure or length. They reach for the same words over and over again: and th

Essay Writing

I am an academic with a PhD in English from Oxford University. Having taught history and literature to undergraduates for over 25 years, I am the author of a text book, The Routledge Guidebook to Paine’s Rights of Man, and a number of peer-reviewed articles. I am also a book editor who has helped 7 first-time authors win awards for their books in communication, education, health, leadership, and science-fiction. Not least, in addition to being an academic writer, I am a skilled popular writer whose articles have been boosted 30 times on Medium (where only .07% of articles get boosted).
Literature

Literature

I’ve taught British literature at university level since 2000 and American literature since 2016. (This includes Oxford University and The New School.) I’ve also published a textbook (The Routledge Guidebook to Paine’s Rights of Man) and numerous peer-reviewed articles. Not least, I have scored the written component of GRE essays from 2002 to 2010.
Music History

Music History

I minored in music as an undergraduate and won an award during my senior year, Best Essay in Music. I have also played piano for 20+ years. I would be an ideal tutor for someone who is majoring in history and desires a knowledge of changes in musical style over the centuries, particularly 18th through 20th.

Over the years, I have taught a diverse range of subjects including literary analysis, the history of horror, the origins of popular democracy, and the age of revolution both onsite and online. At Oxford University (where I earned a Ph.D. in English Literature), more than half of my students attained an upper second or first (comparable to a B+ and A respectively) on the subjects I taught them (18th-century literature and Romanticism). At the New School, I have received many highly positive course evaluations and observation reports from students and faculty alike. Not least, I am an active writer who has published in peer-reviewed journals and prepared scholarly editions of classic works. More recently, I have completed a textbook on Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man (Routledge, forthcoming May 2020). I am also an advisory editor for Anthem Press Gothic Studies.

Excellent and Extremely Knowledgeable

Excellent tutor! Her expertise is phenomenal, and she was able to personalize our session to my specific needs. I met with Frances for help with an essay requiring literary analysis. She helped me to understand what I did correctly while also showing me where I can improve. Her suggestions were wonderful, and I feel more confident than ever about writing future literary analysis essays. I met with other tutors charging the same price per hour, and I can safely say that Frances surpasses them by leaps and bounds. You will not go wrong working with Frances.
