I’m Elliott, a full-time professor with a Ph.D. in math from the University of Rhode Island. I first started tutoring in high school, and I enjoyed the experience so much that I pursued a career in education. During college and graduate school, I tutored in various capacities for an additional eight years. I gained extensive experience by serving as a peer tutor in URI’s Academic Enhancement Center, where I facilitated group and individual sessions for students enrolled in courses that included Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus I, II, & III. I always created a supportive environment, recognized strengths, and identified areas for growth. I eventually earned a Level 3 tutor certification from the College Reading and Learning Association. Separately, I served as a tutor for students learning Wolfram Mathematica software. As a graduate student completing my M.S. in math, I continued to tutor and served as a liaison to assist with tutor training.

I have taught college math for over a decade and recently earned tenure. I have taught a wide range of courses, but I frequently teach Precalculus and Calculus. I can tutor any high school or undergraduate-level math subjects, and I am happy to assist with SAT prep. Because I have extensive experience both as a tutor and as a faculty member, I am well-versed in math education best practices, and my sessions are flexible to suit each student’s unique learning needs. I engage in conversations with students and their parents to decide how best to customize a lesson that scaffolds comprehension and retention. I aim to make math fun and rewarding!

I am a proponent of Universal Design for Learning, which emphasizes the importance of providing multiple means through which students can access and explore content. To do this, I enjoy motivating concepts and employing technology – especially Desmos – to help students conceptualize math. Please contact me if you have any questions about my sessions. I look forward to having an opportunity to work with you and/or your child!
