Bio

My name is Victoria, and I am a first year medical student at Brown University. I graduated from Columbia College with a Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience and a concentration in Latin American & Caribbean Studies in 2024. Throughout college, I was fortunate enough to find mentors who supported my growing interest in both science and the humanities. As a result, I understand the importance of a great mentor, which ultimately is the basis of my approach to tutoring.

My tutoring approach centers around encouragement, structure, and student voice. I have four years of language and literacy tutoring experience in various capacities. As an ESOL tutor in New York City, I have assisted newly-arrived immigrant middle school students and adults with language acquisition and reading comprehension in one-on-one and classroom settings. In the classroom, I created lesson plans to engage my ~10 students with news articles and visual aids. In addition to language instruction, I have coached multiple high school students on the college admissions process over two years, helping students with personal statement essay writing and interview preparation. I have extensive experience writing my own academic papers, personal statements, and research projects throughout my four years at Columbia, as well as working as an editor and writer for on-campus journals and publications. My goal is not just to help students write stronger essays, but to use my experience and guidance to help them feel like capable writers. I take pride in creating a supportive space where each student feels heard and respected—and where they leave each session with skills they can build on.

I am hoping to become a mentor for those seeking advice with personal statement writing and secondary/supplemental essays for medical school and college admissions. Please reach out with any questions or scheduling inquiries, and I will get back to you as soon as possible. I am looking forward to becoming another source of support throughout your educational journey!

While living in New York City, I worked as an ESOL tutor and literacy teacher for elementary and middle school students, as well as an ESOL teacher for adult learners. In this role, I worked with a co-teacher to adapt lessons to meet students’ needs—using visual aids, conversational practice, and collaborative learning strategies to improve language retention and engagement.

I graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Neuroscience and Behavior and am an incoming medical student with a deep interest in psychology and the brain. Having excelled in courses such as The Science of Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, and Neurobiology while at Columbia, I’m excited to help others master key concepts in psychology and develop effective study strategies. I scored a 132 in the Psychology/Sociology section of the MCAT, so I am able to assist with studying for the exam as well.

Extremely knowledgeable and personalized tutoring

Victoria and I worked on drafting secondary essays for my medical school application. Ahead of time, she reviewed my application materials and came prepared to our meeting with ideas on how to translate my experiences into writing. As someone who received multiple interviews and acceptances to the medical schools I am interested in, she was able to give me insights for tailoring my essays to each school. She helped me to significantly improve an essay by providing feedback on overall flow and line-by-line wording. She also asked targeted questions that prompted me to think more deeply about my story to answer "why medicine." In addition to her expertise, she was extremely kind, personable, and responsive. I would recommend Victoria to anyone who is looking for support with their medical school application!
