About Ray

I am an Emmy Award-winning writer with a background in educational media. I was a major contributor to the PBS television series "Between the Lions", where we taught reading basics to millions of students. I was the Editor in Chief of HRM Video, and was a reporter/producer for ABC News "20/20". I have produced educational materials for Scholastic, Inc. and for the Library Video Company. I am also a Random House children's book author.

Throughout my career I have taught reading and writing to both small groups and to individual students. My one-on-one approach is informative, fun, and designed to boost testing scores. Whether preparing for SATs, ACT, GMAT, or general improvement in classroom, my teaching method is to quickly assess the needs of the student and tailor my lessons to meet these particular needs. My style is collaborative, engaging and results-oriented. I respect my students' time and will not waste it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have taught public speaking to both students and professionals. Part of my Masters Degree at the Fairfield University School of Corporate and Political Communications involved working with individuals to make their speaking styles more effective. I've also worked extensively to help students write and deliver their graduation speeches. I have also worked with professionals who have English as a second language to help them express themselves in phone conferences and public meetings.

Social Studies

As the former Editor-in-Chief of a leading educational publishing company (Human Relations Media, Inc.) in New York, part of my job was to research, write and produce educational programs for high school students in politics, government, history, economics and foreign relations. My programs won nearly every industry award, including "Best of Show" from the Society for Technical Communications. As part of my research, I would tutor individual students in schools across the country to see what areas of the social studies topics where most in need of explanation. This helped me to develop a teaching style that is creative, fun, comprehensive, and adapted to the individual needs of the student.

Video Production

I am an Emmy Award winning writer and producer who has extensive experience in video and film production. I am the creator and executive producer of many educational video series, including "Greek Mythology" and "American Tall Tales and Legends", both distributed by the Library Video Company. I have a Masters Degree in Communications, with an emphasis on video and television production.
