Hello my name is John! I have been a social studies teacher for 30 years at middle school level. I am also state certified to teach history and social studies at the high school and college level in the state of Connecticut because I have my Master’s in Education and I also have a Bachelor’s in Communications. For the past 21 years, I have specialized in a curriculum that prioritizes United States history beginning with the fight for U.S. independence through the end of the 19th Century. It also stems from the Connecticut Elementary and Secondary S.S. Frameworks and utilizes the geography, economy, history and civic standards. The course is designed to incorporate student complex thinking, meet the social-emotional needs of all learners and was written to assure cultural sensitivity.
My approach to teaching history is not just learning about significant events and people, but also to explore the how's and why's behind the development of our culture and country. I have a passion for learning from those who have lived this life before us, analyzing the cause and effect relationships from their successes and failures. I also stressed researching from not only reliable secondary sources, but also primary sources from as many stakeholders as possible to get the most accurate portrayal and include all perspectives. There is something extraordinary about reading the unfiltered account of events by those who lived them. My lessons often involved role playing and humor to best bring history alive for my students and tap into the human condition.
Therefore, it is my hope and desire to help pass on this passion for history and social studies to my students. I also hope to lend my expertise to teach, mentor, advise, and support others in their pursuit of excellence.
