My name is Carlane. I have been teaching for thirteen years and spent 9 of those in a therapeutic special education out-placement day school. As a student I thrived when taught through hands on learning. As an adult learner, returning for my initial certification and masters degree, I realized explicit instruction and lessons presented in all three learning styles; auditory, visual and hands on, were the ones that I grasped easily. As I teach, I strive to meet students where they are, incorporating all learning styles in each lesson.
I am trained in the Wilson Reading System and the Orton Gillingham SPIRE program. I have used the Wilson program for four years and SPIRE program for 2. I have 4 years tutoring experience both through the public school system for home bound learners and privately. I prefer the SPIRE reading program due to its 10 steps incorporating the three learning styles as well as many reinforcing lessons. I’ve seen my students grow up to 1.5 years academically over the course of a school year with regular use.
As an avid reader, but reluctant learner myself, I strive to make lessons interesting for each individual. I do this by tailoring lessons to the needs of each student, incorporating their interests in materials and making learning fun.
