Hello! My name's Lily, and I'm a second-year physics PhD student at Yale University studying experimental quantum materials. I graduated cum laude and with high honors from Smith College in physics, with a minor in French, and I spent my junior year in Paris, completing university coursework in literature and the sciences, taught in French, and earning the Ruth Alpern Leipziger Prize for outstanding work in Smith's Paris program. Literature has been a constant thread throughout, from seminars on Faulkner and Dostoevsky to courses on translation, French cinema, and the women writers of eighteenth-century France.

At Yale I have served as a graduate teaching fellow for an undergraduate electricity and magnetism course and for an advanced laboratory courses. In these roles I lead sections, hold weekly office hours, and do much of my teaching one on one, which is where I think the best learning happens.

My favorite part of teaching is meeting a student exactly where they are. In physics, I build intuition first and then reinforce it with careful problem-solving practice, whether for high school and AP Physics, introductory college mechanics and E&M, or upper-level coursework. I bring the same approach to French, from grammar fundamentals to conversation and literature, and to reading and writing about literature in English. I also have a particular love for the history of physics: I wrote a self-directed thesis on the origins of quantum mechanics with research at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, and I find the human story behind the equations is often what makes them click. Calculus

I earned an A in Calculus I, Calculus II, and Multivariable Calculus at Smith College, and I have used calculus daily ever since in my physics coursework and research, from mathematical methods for the physical sciences to graduate electromagnetic theory at Yale. As a graduate teaching fellow for an undergraduate electricity and magnetism course, I spend much of my time helping students see what a derivative or an integral actually means in a physical situation rather than treating it as a rule to memorize. I have taught students who arrived with shaky algebra alongside students ready for vector calculus, and I am comfortable filling in gaps without making anyone feel behind. My aim is for you to leave a session able to set up the problem yourself, not just follow my solution.
French

French

I minored in French at Smith College and spent my junior year at Université Paris Cite with Smith's Sciences à Paris program, where I completed a full load of university coursework in literature and the sciences taught entirely in French. My coursework ranges from High Intermediate and Advanced French to French Translation in Practice, French cinema, and seminars on French cultural studies and the women writers of eighteenth-century France, and I earned the Ruth Alpern Leipziger Prize, awarded by the Paris Program Director to an outstanding student in the program. I currently read and speak French at the C1 level with an excellent accent. I work with students on grammar fundamentals, pronunciation, conversation, and reading literature in the original, and I am especially glad to help with AP French preparation (on which I received a 5 when I was a high school senior) or with building the confidence to actually speak.
Literature

Literature

Literature has been a constant thread in my education alongside physics. At Smith College I took seminars on William Faulkner and on Dostoevsky, courses on the art and practice of translation, the Renaissance, and race, gender, and comedy in American culture, and I studied French and francophone literature both at Smith and during my year in Paris. I also wrote a self-directed thesis in the history of science, which taught me to read primary sources closely and build an argument from textual evidence. I help students move from summarizing what happens in a text to making a claim about it, and I am happy to work on close reading, discussion preparation, or essay drafting and revision. I am also happy to discuss concepts in literary theory, and can submit writing samples if so desired.

I am a physics PhD student at Yale studying experimental quantum materials, and I graduated cum laude with high honors in physics from Smith College. At Yale I have served as a graduate teaching fellow for an undergraduate electricity and magnetism course and for an advanced laboratory course. I tutor high school and AP Physics, introductory college mechanics and electricity and magnetism, and upper-level topics including thermodynamics, classical mechanics, and electronics. My approach is to build physical intuition first, using a picture or a concrete example, and then reinforce it with careful problem-solving practice, because students who understand why a formula works stop needing to memorize which one to use.
Quantum Physics

Quantum Physics

I am a physics PhD student at Yale in condensed matter experiment, where I have completed graduate Quantum Mechanics I and II. As an undergraduate at Smith College I took undergraduate quantum physics, condensed matter physics, and a course on light, relativity, and quantum (modern) physics, and my research has ranged from modeling decoherence in superconducting qubits to my current experimental work on quantum materials. I also wrote a thesis on the origins of quantum mechanics based on research at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, so I can teach both the formalism and the history that produced it. I work with students on wave functions, operators, the hydrogen atom, perturbation theory, and the conceptual questions that textbooks often rush past.
