I am a PhD student in Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, with advanced training in microeconomics, macroeconomics, international trade, econometrics, statistics, and mathematical economics. My academic background allows me to tutor economics at introductory, intermediate, and advanced levels, as well as related subjects such as calculus, statistics, and quantitative methods.

I have 3 years of teaching and tutoring experience through both university instruction and private one-on-one tutoring. In university settings, I have worked with undergraduate students in economics courses by explaining theoretical concepts, reviewing mathematical derivations, helping students solve problem sets, and preparing them for exams. Through private tutoring, I have worked with students ranging from high school to graduate levels and have adapted lessons to their individual coursework, goals, and learning styles.

My approach emphasizes building intuition before moving into equations and applications. I break difficult problems into clear steps, identify where a student’s understanding is breaking down, and use graphs, examples, and practice problems to reinforce the material. My goal is not only to help students complete an assignment or prepare for an exam, but also to give them a structured understanding that they can apply independently.

Approved Subjects

Calculus

Calculus

I am an Economics PhD student at UC Berkeley with extensive training in quantitative methods, including statistics, econometrics, calculus, linear algebra, and optimization. My research and coursework regularly involve mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and working with data, so I am comfortable teaching both the intuition behind quantitative methods and the technical steps needed to solve problems. I can help students build a strong foundation in core concepts, work through challenging problem sets, and develop efficient approaches for exams. I tailor explanations to the student’s level and emphasize understanding why a method works rather than simply memorizing formulas.

Econometrics

Econometrics

BA Economics in Math from Yale, incoming PhD at UC Berkeley, and economics research assistant since 2021.
Macroeconomics

MATLAB

MATLAB

BA Economics in Math from Yale, incoming PhD at UC Berkeley, and economics research assistant since 2021. MATLAB is one of the primary softwares I use for research. My research is on international trade.

Everything !

Matthew is so helpful! Honestly I’m not good at math and matthew explained everything in such a good manner and always ask if what he’s saying makes sense. He also always makes sure that your following along on problems by letting you do it out yourself but also guiding you step by step. I HIGHLY recommend!
