Bio

My objective is to make a positive difference in the lives of my students. I think I manage to do that more often than not.

My approach to tutoring is simple: I try to understand how a student is thinking. This can be done by sharing how I am thinking and invite the student to do the same. This is a collaborative process built on mutual trust.

My approach to tutoring is simple: I try to understand how a student is thinking. This can be done by sharing how I am thinking and invite the student to do the same. This is a collaborative process built on mutual trust.

I started tutoring in 2004, working with high school and middle school students who needed academic support in math. The objective was to improve their depth of knowledge and comprehension of math content so that they could gain confidence and improve their grades in school.

About a year later I began tutoring students for the ACT and SAT. Many of my students were not satisfied with the material in books from big box companies like Princeton Review and Barrons, so I started writing my own materials. Since then, my ACT and SAT books have sold more than 50,000 copies.

Tutoring for ACT and SAT is very different from from academic tutoring because the ACT and SAT tests are very different from tests that students take in school. Preparing for a standardized test is more like sports, where proper technique and repeated practices are key.

I have always enjoyed math and love to share that with my students. Students gain confidence as they find that, with some help and hard work, they can solve homework problems correctly. This confidence carries over to their performance on quizzes in test in school, creating a self-propelled upward cycle of learning and testing.

The key to understanding how to approach ACT science is to realize that it is not a science test. It does not test your scientific knowledge. The information needed to answer almost every question is contained in the passage.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have been tutoring ACT math for 17 years, and my prep books have sold more than 50,000 copies. Because the ACT math test is so different from math tests in school, all students at all levels of ability need to learn how to take this test (time management and problem selection are vital). They may also need to refresh math they forgot (such as Algebra or Geometry formulas) or math that they have not seen (such as Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability).
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have tutored algebra 1 for 18 years and worked with students at all levels of ability. My goal is to improve students' grades by improving their confidence through a deeper understanding of the material. Algebra 1 is very important because it is the foundation of all the high school math that follows. Mastering the fundamentals of algebra 1 is essential. Algebra is also the most frequent topic that appears on the ACT and SAT standardized tests.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have tutored algebra 2 for 18 years and worked with students at all levels of ability. My goal is to improve students’ grades by improving their confidence through a deeper understanding of the material. Algebra 2 is very important because it is the foundation of all the high school and college math that follows. Mastering the fundamentals of algebra 2 is essential for all STEM and business majors. Algebra is also the most frequent topic that appears on the ACT and SAT standardized tests.
Geometry

Geometry

I have been tutoring geometry for 18 years. Many students might struggle with Geometry because It requires visual reasoning and more memorization than other classes, but that is exactly why I like tutoring it. You might be surprised to know that Geometry is used in calculus and other college level math. It also appears on the ACT and SAT standardized tests.
ISEE

ISEE

I have tutored the math sections of the ISEE for 17 years and worked with students at all levels of ability. My goal is to improve students' scores by improving their confidence through a deeper understanding of how to take the test and a refresh of their math knowledge (if needed).
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have been tutoring pre-algebra for 18 years. Pre-algebra is very important because it is the foundation of all the high school math that follows. Mastering the fundamentals taught in pre-algebra is essential. In my math tutoring it is not unusual for us to have to backtrack to cover in material in pre-algebra so that the student can make better progress in another high school class.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have tutored pre-calculus for 18 years and worked with students at all levels of ability. My goal is to improve students' grades by improving their confidence through a deeper understanding of the material. Precalculus is an interesting blend of algebra and trigonometry content. Much of what is learned in precalculus is used in higher level high school and college classes. There is also some pre-calculus content on the SAT and ACT standardized tests.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have been tutoring SAT math for 17 years, and my prep books have sold more than 50,000 copies. Because the SAT math test is so different from math tests in school, all students at all levels of ability need to learn how to take this test (time management and problem selection are vital). They may also need to refresh math they forgot (such as Algebra or Geometry formulas) or math that they have not seen (such as Trigonometry, Statistics and Probability).
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have tutored trigonometry for 18 years and worked with students at all levels of ability. My goal is to improve students' grades by improving their confidence through a deeper understanding of the material. Trigonometry usually first appears in Algebra 2 and again in Precalculus. Trigonometry is important because it is used in higher level high school and college classes. It also appears on the ACT and SAT standardized tests.

Clear, patient guidance

My son has had several math tutors who tended towards the pedantic side and we’re not a good fit. Richard is patient and clear in teaching but also kind and understanding. He helps kids relax and learn!
