Welcome! My name is Justin—many of my students call me Mr. J. I’m truly glad you’re here.

If your child is feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, you’re not alone. Finding the right tutor can be difficult. My goal is to make this process feel supportive, clear, and encouraging from the very beginning.

I offer a free 20-minute consultation to see if we’re a good fit. During this time, I’ll learn about your child’s needs, strengths, and interests, as well as what you value most in an educator.

I am a graduate of the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education, holding a B.S. in Elementary Education and an M.A. in Applied Curriculum & Instruction. I also hold active teaching licenses in Connecticut and Alaska. I’ve worked with students ages 2–16 as a teacher, paraprofessional, mentor, and camp director.

My approach is rooted in trust, collaboration, and a holistic view of learning. By integrating social-emotional learning, developmental psychology, and creative expression, I help students build confidence, curiosity, and a genuine love of learning.

Every child is unique, so I create individualized plans tailored to your child’s goals. I draw from research-based methods including Science of Reading, UDL, inquiry-based learning, and culturally responsive teaching.

If you’d like to connect, I’d love to meet you. Wishing you and your family the very best on your learning journey.

— Mr. J

Approved Subjects

Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified elementary school teacher in the states of Alaska and Connecticut. I have a Master of Arts in Integrated Curriculum and Instruction and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. I have taught in various educational roles at the elementary level, including first-grade teacher, second-grade teacher, building substitute teacher, and paraprofessional.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I teach handwriting as a vital cognitive bridge to literacy. Using a multisensory approach aligned with the Wilson Fundations framework, I help students master letter formation, proper grip, and spatial awareness. By automating the mechanics of writing, I help students reduce cognitive load, allowing them to focus their mental energy on composition and expression rather than the physical act of writing.
Phonics

Phonics

I provide explicit, systematic phonics instruction using the Wilson Fundations program. My approach focuses on the logic of the English language—teaching students to decode and encode with confidence. By integrating Heggerty Phonemic Awareness, I ensure students have the auditory "foundation" necessary for phonetic mastery.
Reading

Reading

I am a Master's- level Literacy interventionist specializing in the Science of Reading. Using the Wilson Fundations and Heggerty frameworks, I provide diagnostic, multisensory intervention to close reading gaps. I have a proven track record of moving students from "Well Below" to "Well Above" grade level benchmarks (DIBELS 8) in 60 days.
Spelling

Spelling

I teach spelling as "encoding"—the process of hearing sounds and translating them into written symbols. Using the Wilson Fundations framework, I teach students the specific rules and patterns of English orthography (such as syllable types and spelling options). This systematic approach moves students away from rote memorization and toward a deep, structural understanding of how words are built.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

I help students build a robust "mental lexicon" through explicit vocabulary instruction. My method goes beyond rote memorization, focusing on morphology (roots/suffixes) and context clues. This approach ensures students don't just "know" words, but can use them fluently in their reading and writing.
Writing

Writing

I teach functional, fluent handwriting as a vital component of literacy. Using a multisensory approach aligned with Wilson Fundations, I help students master letter formation, spacing, and pencil grip. This reduces the cognitive load on the student, allowing them to focus on the content of their writing rather than the mechanics.
