I am a recently retired educator with 35 years of experience working at all educational levels. My most recent position was as a high school principal. Prior to becoming an administrator, I worked at the elementary, early childhood, and middle school levels teaching special needs children. I also worked in general education classrooms as a co-teacher delivering curriculum in line with the common core. My specialty is educating children who have been challenged by traditional classroom settings. I am a compassionate individual with a love of learning and I bring this love to the classroom and the tutoring session. Children are not all the same and therefore do not benefit from a "one size fits all" approach to learning. I am very good at understanding the individual needs of all types of children and look forward to working with new students.

My tutoring subjects include reading, language arts and math at the elementary level through grade 5. I am also skilled at teaching grades 6-8 in reading, language arts and math through pre-algebra. I typically teach through a discovery method, providing multiple opportunities for students to learn the concepts and practice them. I am familiar with the current initiatives which the state of Connecticut has introduced during the past few years. This includes teaching for the Common Core and also test preparation for the Smarter Balanced Assessment.

I prefer to tutor in the student's home or in a neutral location such as the public library. If I am in the home, there would need to be an adult present in the home during the tutoring session. My cancellation policy is 24 hours notice required. With 24 hours notice, a session would be able to be re-scheduled. Specifics can be worked out once we agree upon a time, frequency, and location.

I look forward to hearing from you soon. Please contact me for additional information and to arrange a time to meet.

Approved Subjects

ADHD

ADHD

I have worked for over 25 years with students who experience the effects of ADD/ADHD. I allow students the opportunity to move around during my lessons embracing the philosophy that if the child is using all of their energy concentrating on sitting still, then they have nothing left to concentrate on learning. Most ADD/ADHD students are very bright and can learn in the right environment.
Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is one of the invisible disabilities which often goes undetected. I have worked with many young students over the years that have not been able to explain why they are not learning to read. As a CT certified special education teacher, my experience has taught me that patience and understanding will go a long way to encourage these students to trust in their intuition and enable them to learn. I have also received specialized training in methods which specifically address the dyslexic child. I look forward to sharing those methods with new students.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

I have over 25 years of teaching experience in elementary and middle schools. I have worked with a variety of students in both the regular and special needs classrooms.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have taught math to students in grades K-8 in both a general education classroom and a resource room for special education students. I use a hands-on approach where ever possible in order to help students understand the concepts in a concrete way.
Phonics

Phonics

Phonics is only one way of teaching beginning reading, writing, and spelling skills. I use phonics as a systematic method to help students learn to decode words. I have received specialized training in several phonics methods such as "Let's Read", Orton-Guillingham, and others. I have more than 25 years working with students in the classrooms of Connecticut.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have worked with students in middle school in the public schools of CT. I am CT certified and have achieved the designation of "Highly Qualified Teacher" according to CT standards. I specifically taught reading and math at both the elementary and middle school levels. I would welcome the opportunity to work with your student.
Reading

Reading

Reading was my first love of teaching. Seeing students light up when they realize they are actually reading the printed word gives me the greatest satisfaction. I have taught reading in the public schools for more than 25 years. I use a variety of teaching methods including phonics, sight word, and configuration approaches. Teaching words in context helps students to understand what they are reading. I also use techniques such as visualization to help students "see" the words on the page. I maintain my CT teaching certification.
Special Needs

Special Needs

There is a place in my heart for children who experience significant difficulties with learning. As a CT certified special education teacher with over 25 years of experience, I personally know the struggles these children face. I have successfully worked with students with learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, behavioral challenges, and ADD/ADHD in the public school setting at the elementary, middle and high school levels. I look forward to working with your child.
Spelling

Spelling

Spelling is becoming an art form. Since many schools are using computers to assist students with their writing, children often use text shorthand when writing. I encourage students to think about their audience when writing and teach them standard English spelling. I have experience working with a variety of students in this area during my tutoring sessions and also in classrooms.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is an important part of reading comprehension. I teach vocabulary through the use of context clues and other methods for ensuring that children are able to comprehend what they are reading.

Extremely knowledgeable and patient tutor

Penny has been working with my 9-year old daughter for several months now and I cannot give her enough praise for the amazing job she does. From math, to writing, and speech Penny works through it all. She has an incredible amount of knowledge and always has just the right way to help my daughter understand the material she needs to. From tongue twisters for her speech articulation to Moose Math for her math skills Penny adapts each session for what my daughter needs to work on and how she learns best. Penny encourages me to get input from my daughter's teacher on what she needs to improve upon in the classroom and uses the information to really target and hone in on these areas to help my daughter succeed. She is extremely patient and kind. My daughter leaves each session with a smile on her face and feeling good about herself. Penny is truly an amazing tutor and one I hope to have working with my daughter for months to come as she is flourishing under Penny's tutelage.

A kind and steady force...

Penny worked with both of my high schoolers this year and I cannot say enough about how helpful she was in helping them work through academic obstacles, providing guidance on how to tackle projects and time management, and validating strong choices they made on their own as she helped them grow as students. The greatest gift for me as a parent is that the quality of my own interactions with the kids around school improved and became FAR less stressful for all of us; I was no longer in the position of unwanted tutor/"nagging" parent in the kids' eyes. Penny was their ally in managing each week of school and I was able to take a much different role...where the kids came to me for what they truly needed from me specifically. All this to say, Penny is fantastic and really impacted our whole family dynamic, not simply our kids' report cards. :) Thank you, Penny!!

Wonderful tutor

Ms. Penny has been our son's tutor for the past 2 years. When he first started he was almost failing English and spelling. Now he no longer needs the tutoring and received his first A on his progress report a few weeks ago. I highly recommend Ms. Penny. She is able to get on a child's level with patience and understanding.

We love Ms. Penny

Ms. Penny jumped right in, she understood what we needed help with and began right away. My kids love her! That to me is number one. She gave homework as I requested. Its so great we found her! And for anyone looking for an amazing tutor... hire Ms. Penny. You will be impressed!! Update: We live 90 miles away from Ms. Penny, it took me 5 months to convince my wife and kids that was to far to drive. We will not be using her anymore because of the drive. The good news is, this will free up her time for somebody's else family to have such a great tutor. Jamie and I highly recommend her. Jamie and Bob Doyle Thanks Ms Penny for all that you have done for my family.

Miss Penny Rocks

My son has been receiving lessons from Miss Penny for over 6 months now. Having a child who struggles with math and reading, it can be difficult to find ways to make practicing these skills fun. She uses many different and creative ways to keep my son engaged and has a ton of patience. He has made many gains in school an I credit Miss Penny for much of his success. She is super patient and is very consistent. I would highly recommend Miss Penny as a tutor to any parent who has a child with learning disabilities Couldn't be more pleased!

Great Tutor!!!!

My son who is struggling in first grade is working Penny once a week. She is a great tutor and great fit for him. He has difficulties in many areas and every week I see his confidence and skills getting better and better. Her teaching is very innovative and fun, and keeps my active son engaged during each session. I know we are providing the best opportunity for our son to be successful by having her work with him. She has also provided a lot of help so we can get him the best support during class time. We will have our son continue to work with her through summer. She is extremely accommodating and flexible to my son's schedule. I would recommend her to anyone looking for a great tutor for their child. We are very pleased and impressed with the work she has done with our child so far.
