Hi, I’m Andrea! I have my Master of Occupational Therapy degree and B.S. in Biology (minor in Psychology). I have been an OT for 7.5 years, working with children and adults in many settings. I tutored throughout grad school, college, and high school.

OT combines my two loves: the human body and teaching. I teach every day. I constantly assess patients’ learning styles and acquisition of information, adapt instruction, and use evidence-based teach-back methods to assess understanding. I help patients (and caregivers/parents) understand disease, functional deficit, or injury, and the recovery and treatment processes. With children, I often use science experiments, games, and crafts as engaging therapeutic activities. I am proficient in elementary and secondary subjects (math, reading, handwriting, and science).

As an OT Fieldwork Educator (clinical instructor), I teach OT and OT Assistant students during 8- to 12-week fieldworks, and supervise Kinesiology students during 16-week practicums. Hands-on, engaged learning is not a one-way street! In helping others learn, I grow as a clinician and teacher.

I often work with young adults with ADHD; ADHD frequently manifests as learning differences and executive function difficulties that impact life and study skills. A diagnosis does not determine any person's trajectory. With appropriate coaching, all people can develop skills for learning and life.

I also have a strong background in grammar and proof-reading. As an officer in various clubs/jobs during college and graduate school, I designed engaging fliers and written notices. I loved being the "Uber-Editor" for my dormitory's weekly newsletter and painstakingly edited pages and pages of print during my years in dorm life.

I am not providing OT services; I am taking my expertise as a healthcare professional, who has taught in many capacities, and pivoting to assist learners of all ages as a tutor.

Proofreading

I can't turn off my editing brain, which makes reading Facebook posts particularly painful. Joking aside, I have a strong background in grammar and proof-reading. I loved being the "Uber-Editor" for my dormitory's weekly newsletter and painstakingly edited pages and pages of print during my years in dorm life. Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I believe math can be accessible and engaging for all students. I am creative in the use of multi-modal learning strategies and like to help young learners see and feel math in real-world applications.

I am an expert in grasp and fine motor development as an occupational therapist. I understand that handwriting instruction should not just focus on the written output, but also the input (posture in chair, shoulder and arm position, grasp, etc.) that impact writing endurance, visual perception, and self-confidence.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Has the transition to remote and online learning suddenly made school and studying seemingly impossible? You are not alone! The global pandemic has taken a toll on our students and families. Without the structure of physical school, study and organizational skills deficits have become much more obvious. For over six years, I have worked with students and adults regarding overcoming Executive Function deficits, in order to improve life skills, studying, and life-long learning. I work from a strengths-based approach. Identifying learning preferences is only part of the picture. We will work together to identify how you express your learning, and best strategies for you to implement in your every-day life to address task initiation, working memory, organization, sustained attention, task completion, self-monitoring (assessing how you are doing with a task), and impulse control. We will develop individualized study and test-taking strategies based on your strengths and needs.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

As an occupational therapist, I often work with older pediatric clients (middle and high school) in addition to college students with ADHD and sensory processing disorder diagnoses. These diagnoses often lead to learning differences and difficulty with executive function (sustained attention, time management, planning, organization, self-monitoring/reflection, impulse-control, emotional control) that impact learning and study skills. I firmly believe that a diagnosis does not determine any person's life trajectory, and that with appropriate interventions, all people can learn appropriate skills for studying and learning throughout life.

Cooking,

Cooking

One-on-one and in small groups, it is fun to cook and bake! Not only do you learn new skills, but you get to eat something yummy when you're done. Cooking is such an interesting and necessary skill to learn for all people and all ages. I believe that no one is too young (or too old!) to learn about food and food preparation. I have been able to lead classes virtually during the pandemic, so don't be afraid to reach out. I welcome you to "join" me in my kitchen. There is an art in learning how to read and interpret recipes, great math lessons behind measurements (and doubling Grandma's cookie recipe!), and the science of how flavors come together. In the past, I have developed visual recipes for learners who have various deficits in learning and reading, in order to help them be more independent in this life-sustaining skill. Cooking is also a great way to get picky eaters more engaged in the meal process and open up their palates (I like to call it a science experiment). I can be your guide in the kitchen!
Sewing,

Sewing

I learned to sew about 20 years ago when I was in 5th or 6th grade, and I believe it is an important skill for everyone to know! From sewing on a button to mending, learning to sew by hand is a great skill to save money and resources. I have also been machine sewing for many years. I frequently make practical projects like burp cloths and small quilts for friends' babies, face masks and bags (to keep them clean in backpack or purse), microwave-safe bowl and mug cozies, trivets, coasters, table runners, zippered pouches, and grocery bags.
Volleyball

Volleyball

I have coached volleyball for 7 seasons (middle and high school), in addition to volunteering for an elementary/middle school skill development camp. I have been playing volleyball for about 20 years, and am a setter and defensive specialist.

Patient and Helpful

Andrea is very helpful and gave me the confidence to cook new things in my Instant Pot! Now I’m able to make lots of things using some of the ground rules and recipes we began with.

ADHD organizational skills

Andrea has been very helpful with my son’s ADHD struggles. She helped him clearly define and prioritize goals. She was able to help organize him by developing strategies, such as creating reminder systems through Google calendar. This enabled him to self monitor and improve on his follow up skills. Most importantly he looked forward to his sessions and was motivated to improve. Andrea was always so positive and encouraging, but at the same time made my son accountable for his progress. Her feedback and directions were always very detailed, which gave me confidence that she knew what she was doing. I highly recommend Andrea to anyone who would benefit from getting help with improving their executive functioning skills.

Hi Jen, thanks so much for your feedback and kind words. Self-monitoring and follow-up are so important, and we hit our sweet spot right out of the gate! It is nice to work with motivated students like your son.

Great information and tools!

I am a parent who was searching g for an organizational tutor for my daughter. Andrea and I had a one on one to start so I could express concerns. She really wanted to know about my daughter so she could start in the most productive manor, and explained her process. Now, after about 15 lessons, my daughter (jr in high school with anxiety and ADHD) is doing so much better using skills she has learned she enjoys talking to Andrea and is someone she trusts. Her productivity is up, as are organizational skills and self awareness. We feel so lucky to have found her!

Susan, 64 lessons with Andrea
Tutor responded:

Susan, thank you so much for your words. I very much enjoy working with your daughter and seeing how much progress she has made!

Wonderful tutor that can work with any age level

I am currently a college Junior, and I started working with Andrea last year. She was able to assess my situation as time went by and I evolved and provided me with both the skills and tools in order to maximize my success. Additionally, she was able to assist me with week-to-week organization and planning. I will definitely be able to carry many of these skills down the road and utilize them later in my education and work experience. I look forward to working with her into the future.

Inga, 41 lessons with Andrea
Tutor responded:

I look forward to our sessions, as well. It is great to see how you are spearheading group projects and keeping organized. You have made great progress and your success in the classroom is well-earned!

So patient and skilled!

Andrea has been amazing help for my 15 year old daughter who is challenged by ADHD. They meet multiple times per week and Andrea has helped her learn tools to enhance her executive function skills, like organization and the use of "brain breaks." My daughter LOVES working with her and I am seeing the benefits!

Karen, 100 lessons with Andrea
Tutor responded:

Karen, the feeling is mutual and I look forward to our sessions. Thanks for such kind words.

Tutor responded:

Susan, it has been wonderful to work with your daughter. It is great to have a family that is open to varied strategies and is so communicative.

Patient, knowledgeable and great teacher

I wasn't sure what it would be like taking a sewing class over zoom, but she made it work. She basically gave me a beginning sewing class to help me get to know my new sewing machine, and get comfortable sewing on it. I had a traumatic introduction to sewing decades ago with a sewing class in junior high, and Andrea and this lesson increased my confidence. I am so pleased with what she taught me and am planning to take at least a few more lessons. I HIGHLY recommend h.er

Jodi, 27 lessons with Andrea
Tutor responded:

Thanks, Jodi! I am so glad we've been able to work together to build up your sewing skills. More projects (and fabric) await! :-D
