I believe every student deserves to be considered as an integrated individual rather than a mere sum of test scores, demographic data, assessments or any other quantifiable metric that may be captured in a dossier. That being said, since such information does exist and has been interwoven throughout the system, then there needs to be a priority to be sure that a student’s dossier fairly represents the truth of their situation. I am passionate about providing strong support to students in difficult circumstances.

While I do not currently possess a master’s degree, I have already passed the Praxis II for English grades 7-12 and been accepted into the Alternate Route to Certification (ARC) program starting this September, completing in May of 2018. Once that is in hand, it is my goal to earn a master’s in an educational field within 2-3 years. And, despite my bachelor’s being in English and American Studies, over my first two years of college I was on track for a Coastal Studies degree, so I have a fair background in the field of Marine Science. Furthermore, during my time as a substitute teacher, I handled a middle school math class for a three-week period and found the experience enjoyable.

As a professional mariner, community organizer, part-time educator and service technician, I have acquired a deep bank of experience in systemic analysis, investigative aptitude, mechanical knowledge, practical application, classroom control and the ability to communicate complex concepts in concise manner. I believe this array of skills, combined with a vigorous work ethic and rigorous sense of commitment, make me a strong and versatile asset as a teacher or tutor.

Through life experience, insight, and empathy along with a robust, inquisitive mind and a practiced skill of communication, I feel comfortable adapting to a myriad of cultural contexts and have the capability to take complex dynamics and make them easier for students and their families or support personnel to understand.
