About Lisa

Explore tutoring with an experienced, knowledgeable, caring tutor who has thousands of hours in many subjects.

"The most precious gift you can give someone is your time."

Whether you are a: parent who is concerned about your child, student who is struggling with a course, special needs student with ADD, Aspergers, Dyslexia, Autism, corporate executive that needs to learn a new language, someone who has to pass a course to keep your job, college, graduate or PhD student who needs help with your papers, ESL/TESOL student who needs to improve English speaking/writing skills, HS student who struggles with the SAT or ACT, medical student doing an internship and needs proof reading, GED or ASVAB candidate and needs to understand Math or an ELA test taker and need fine tuning, I can help, whether you need help ONE-ON-ONE or ONLINE.

With many years of experience, I like to give back to others. I remember when I was in 4th grade and I was having a very difficult time with my English class. Two teachers took me "under their wings" and tutored me on their off-time. I never forgot that. By the 6th grade I was the winner of the Spelling Bee, outperforming all the kids. As John Lubbock said, "The important thing is not so much that every child should be taught, as that every child should be given the wish to learn." My wish continues to be to learn, along with everyone that I teach!

I am currently teaching at the Graduate, High School and Elementary levels. I make learning fun! The subjects that I tutor are English, ESL (English as Second Language), Math, Science, Social Studies, Languages, writing, reading comprehension, SAT/ACT comprehension and writing, college essays, Elementary and Intermediate Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, GED, ASVAB, TOEFL, Science and all that interest me.

I have experience in preparing foreign language students for the TOEFL exam. I specialize in test taking strategies, and techniques.

In fact, on the SAT, several of my students increased their scores by 120+ points, with only 4-6 sessions of tutoring. That score means the difference between being accepted by New York University, Princeton or a State School.

I believe that I can make a difference for someone else, and that could be you! So if you would like to have fun while you learn, let me help you to be all that you can be. I also passed the background check with flying colors, so you can be sure that I am an honorable citizen. I have over 1041 EXCELLENT feedbacks too!

"Good tutor but unaccommodating with scheduling"

- Raavi, Scarsdale, NY on 8/26/13
Lisa replied on 8/31/2013

Its true, I am very patient and innovative in my teaching methods, but there is a discrepancy pertaining to the scheduling. My days are not packed as stated, but my schedule does depends on the needs of ALL my students. In this instance, it was never made clear to me that I had to stay and wait for 45 minutes for the second student to come. In addition, the son had a full summer schedule leaving little time when we could do the session. This was a 2 part session, with the second part beginning at 630P, but because of the lateness that would put the lesson from 715P to 815P. I could not stay beyond the original session time due to other commitments. In addition, my decision to no longer tutor there was ALSO based on the fact that this was NOT the first time that they were NOT able to make their session. I forgave the missing session LAST TIME, but this time only billed for the time that they were not able to keep their commitment. They never made it clear that I had to stay for the second part of the session. My policy is clearly stated on my site. As many of my long time students know, I often stay longer than I bill for, and I expect my students to keep their commitments, as I am committed to them.

"Good Tutor. Helped Daughter Pass Math and Science Final"

- Nelson, Bronx, NY on 7/20/12
Lisa replied on 7/21/2012

We had limited time to turn it around, since she has been getting test grades in the 50's and below. But, she pulled it off with an 80 on her Earth Science test!

Then, I found out that her Math results were even better! Way to go!!
I don't work miracles, but I sure try to.

"Talented but not Dependable"

- Lisa, Scarsdale, NY on 7/15/12
Lisa replied on 7/23/2012

There are a lot of discrepancies here to what actually took place. My record speaks for itself. I am always professional, kind, and patient, but I cannot please everyone. It's unfortunate that her son did not get the help he needed. We only did one session and it was rated: GOOD.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been working with ADD/ADHD/Autistic kids and adults for many years. Many are teenagers with attention issues, and hyper-activity, which prevents them from focusing for longer periods of time.

I am very patient and find ways to engage them to learn, at their own pace.

I am working with several Autistic children, ADD Adults, dyslexic adults and teenagers, and ADHD children.

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring pre-algebra and algebra for several years now. I was on the Math TEAM in High School, and we did many competitions with the other schools. I enjoy teaching Math because it keeps my mind sharp!

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have been working with Autistic children for several years now. I know how to engage them, gain their trust, and get them to do what I ask.

Many of my children look forward to their lessons. One five year old, told his mother that the best part of Sunday is when he gets to spend time doing a lesson with me. This is an autistic child who has grown tremendously in the past year. To say his parents are happy is an understatement. I also recommend nutrition intervention, since I am Certified in Nutrition.

I am very patient and find ways to engage them to learn, at their own pace. I am working with several Autistic children, ADD Adults, dyslexic adults and teenagers, and ADHD children.

Career Development

I have been counseling adults and young students in many areas, in preparation for their goals. I trained many people in the financial area including setting tangible goals, and ways to measure them.

When I tutor students for specific tests, I always ask what their goals are, and where they see themselves in the future. I have over 20 years of business experience in many different fields, so I can advise accordingly.

College Counseling

With many years of experience in many areas, I would be able to help you with regards to College Counseling. I can help with writing essays for entrance applications, since I know what the Colleges are looking for. I have helped many students, preparing for their entrance exams also.

So if you have a dream to go to College, gather your information and I can help you put it together into a nice package that will appeal to the Colleges.

My background includes Public Relations, writing copy for advertisements, research, and just knowing what people like. So send an email to check for my availability.

Many years ago, I was accepted to the Culinary Institute in Hyde Park. Cooking has been my passion for many years. When I was a child, my mother would cook up many delicious dishes, and I learned a lot from her. I did restaurant reviews in New York City, since I had the cooking background, and the writing skills. I even did some business luncheons for clients in which I prepared all the food, and I had over 120 attendees. I still love to read about new recipes, and about natural foods and health.

I understand the challenges that Dyslexic students have. They are often the brightest students/adults, but have challenges and frustration.

I am currently working with several dyslexic students, and I have seen tremendous growth, and improvement in their confidence level, and ability to accomplish more. I am very patient and find ways to engage them to learn, at their own pace. Often, I will reward them, if I observe a milestone that has been reached.

Having studied how people learn languages gives me the edge with dyslexic students, because I can observe what they do, and work to improve their abilities.

Ear Training

I am a trained singer with experience in the studio. I realized that I could sing when I was seven years old. I was in musicals, and I learned to play several instruments by ear. I can hear two notes and tell you what song it is. Music has been one of my saving graces. I sang in churches with Gospel singers. I can play instruments by ear, without knowing the tune prior.

Elementary Math

Elementary Math is one of the basic components of everyday practical math. Without a good foundation, it can be very frustrating for kids as they go into the higher level math courses. I have a natural way to explain things so that the kids understand the whys and hows. I using visual components that get the kids to think and apply what they learn. They understand, and then get to enjoy math!

I have been teaching ESL students from many countries including China, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam, Korea, France, Mexico, Dominican Republic, India, and most Latin American countries. My students enjoy their lessons, and look forward to their next lesson.

I speak three languages and studied five languages, so I understand the challenges of learning a new language.

I am very patient and enjoy working with my students.

I've been tutoring for the GED for close to 5 years now. I know the tricks for the Math section, and my students develop confidence when working with me. It takes time, and practice to pass all the sections. The world opens up when you pass the GED. Doors open, and you are able to do so many things in your life.

I have been working with Elementary children for many years now. I work with them with hand-writing, phonics, and cursive writing as well. I have many techniques which help them with hand coordination, and writing faster and clearer. I studied how children learn languages at New York University, and I apply everything that I know into my sessions.

Linear Algebra

I have been teaching Linear Algebra for three years now. I can teach graphic linear equations, solving them by substitution, algebraically, and by elimination. I was on the Math team many years ago, and I could do the problems faster than any other team members. I also have an extensive Math background due to being in the field of Finances, teaching for the GED and the ASVAB tests.

I am also a graduate of New York University, which has only a 30% acceptance rate. I enjoy teaching all aspects of Algebra.

I was a Marketing and Management Major at New York University. I also have over 20+ years of Marketing experience from consumer products, to promotions, sales in various financial areas.

I am Certified in Nutrition by the University of Miami, School of Medicine Continuing Education Division. I have a Bachelor of Science degree from New York University. I hold Certifications as a Weight Management Advisor and Nutritional Wellness Consultant from PROEVITY, Illinois.

I have over 20+ years of nutritional experience, referrals from Doctors, and health professionals. I have helped people all over the world, from the USA, to Canada, to Europe.

I have helped people get our of HOSPICE, saved children and I even helped cats, dogs, and birds with nutrition.

I have studied HOMEOPATHIC Medicine, AYURVEDA (Indian), and Chinese Medicines.

I have access to over 20,000 nutritional products, which I have studied, and researched on an ongoing basis.

I have been working with PHONICS with students of all ages and levels. Since I understand how we learn languages because I studied Linguistics, I found that this method reduces the time needed to learn. The students who I am teaching using PHONICS improve at a much rapid level and they enjoy their lessons. My students consist of 4 year olds, Special needs students, ESL students from all countries around the world, and adults who are learning to read for the first time. The success rate is excellent and they look forward to their lessons, because they are fun. If you are having fun, you are more relaxed and your mind is like a parachute.........the rest is history.

I was a Press Photographer for a radio station, two publications, and also several non-profit organizations. I took over 37,000 photographs of people, places, and events. I enjoy capturing the expression on people's faces or a unique shot of a Hawaiian Gran Canyon, a rainbow, or a Maine Coon Cat. I can teach you how to be creative . Although I do know how to use digital cameras, I still prefer the old-fashion film ones. I even was hired to photograph a Bar Mitzvah. That was a lot a fun. So capturing the moment takes some skill, but with a trained eye, you can be a much better photographer!!

I have been teaching reading skills to students from ages 3 to adults. I use many resources to customize the lessons for each particular student. I make the lessons fun too, so my students look forward to their next lesson. Some of the students that I have taught have included: a 24 year old who dropped out of school and always wants me to extend the session, a father with a son who is in the 2nd grade and the father is not able to read or help his son with his homework, a 1st grader who was in danger of being left back a grade, a man who wanted to get a better job, but could not read, so he could not fill -out his applications properly, a teenager whose parents were in IRAQ and was failing every subject, and so many more.

Social Studies

I have been tutoring Social Studies from the 3rd grade level to High School. I have taught students about History, and Global History. I use all the materials that the teachers use to do the lessons.

My students all achieve scores in the 90's because I have ways to simplify the materials, and have them recall much more than they would on their own.

I am a native Spanish speaker and have been teaching the language for many years. Some of my clients are students from elementary, middle and high schools. Others consist of Executives from Corporations who need to learn the language for business or travel purposes. I scored a nearly perfect score on the SAT in Spanish, and I have taught thousands of hours. I am also an New York University graduate.

I can teach tennis because I was the number one player in the East Coast (18 and under) when I was 16 years old. I still love the sport, and I enjoy teaching it to the younger generation. I played in competitions till I entered college, and when I was 30 years old, I returned to competitive tennis. I guess, once a tennis player, always a tennis player!

The TOEFL is a particularly difficult exam for non-native speakers. It has many challenges which I can help you with. I use strategies to improve your score, and you will feel much more confident when you take your exam. Knowing what to expect and taking the mystery out of the exam makes it possible to achieve your best! Let me help you get there.
