Nurturing a love of learning is my life's work and my passion. I am a certified, masters level, tenured teacher with 15 years of experience, and three certifications with a lot of compassion, creativity, and heart. I have been a specialist as well as taught or cotaught in the classroom. In working at a variety of levels over this time, I have experienced the joy of helping a student learn the building blocks of reading and writing with systematic, multisensory, evidence based, and specialized instruction, as well as helping a student connect to what they are writing about and express their knowledge in their own unique voice. I have seen a student develop understanding of numeracy as well as helped students with algebra. Science and Social Sciences are some of my favorite areas to teach and tutor in because they integrate all of the basics and give them context. Seeing students make connections to their world is rewarding for both the student and I.
I individualize our time to each of my students' unique learning profiles, interests, and goals. The flow and cadence of my sessions include a brief activation of prior knowledge, an interactive mini-lesson, followed by guided and independent practice. Sessions end with a brief review and reflection. I have many resources that are evidence based, standards aligned, and incorporate FUN and ENGAGEMENT into learning. There is often a lot of laughter during sessions with me.
My education degree addressed general education and special education, which allowed me to explore evidence-based methods of assisting students with a range of learning profiles. Some of my students need modifications and direct, systemic instruction, and others need enrichment and challenge. My masters furthered my understanding of language and literacy skills and instruction as well as its impact in learning across subject matter. I tutor all subjects, and have worked across all grade levels.
I look forward to hearing from you about how we can best collaborate towards your student's learning!

Grammar

Grammar

I have over 15 years experience tutoring writing and grammar, and have received extensive, evidence-based, training in grammar in both written and spoken language. Written language at all of its levels can be a challenge for many students. I am a certified teacher who has been a specialist as well as taught or cotaught language arts and English classes for over 10 years in public school systems. In working at a variety of levels over this time, I have experienced the joy of helping a student learn the building blocks of writing (spelling, grammar, word order), as well as helping a student connect to what they are writing about and express their knowledge in their own unique voice. Seeing a student develop their unique writing voice while maintaining accurate core writing skills is rewarding for both the student and myself! In addition to teaching, I have done private tutoring to address the common core state standards for language arts and English. My masters degree was specialized in methods of language and literacy instruction. During my teaching career I have taken continuing education in evidenced based methods for teaching , spelling, grammar, and writing (paragraphs, essays, and lengthier papers for secondary and post-secondary education). Word order, parts of speech, parts of words and how they change in sentences, verb tense, punctuation, and connection of words and simple sentences to form more complex sentences are the building blocks of grammar. Using all of these together to express knowledge takes evidence based strategies, experience, and engaging methods. As a special education teacher, I am able to differentiate the way I teach and individualize my instruction to meet each students' learning style. I also took all of the college level linguistics classes as part of that degree which helped me to learn to break down, analyze, and, and reconstruct words and sentences. I continued on to a masters degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders which focused on the study of language and how to teach

I have tutored for over 20 years and worked in public schools for 10 years. I enjoy helping students learn in a way that works for their learning profile. We are all different and we all respond to different teaching practices and styles, which is why I have worked through experience and my education to collect as many evidence based approaches as I can for my students! Through three teaching certifications, my experience in teaching and tutoring, and extensive, specialized continuing education, I have knowledge and expertise in teaching students with a variety of learning profiles. have worked with students for over 10 years in public school systems to address the common core state standards. Phonics

As a certified teacher with over 10 years of experience, I have been trained in and have experience in explicit and systematic phonics instruction and phonemic awareness instruction, as well as linking phonics instruction to reading, writing, and integrating it with more complex aspects of literacy programs. That being said, it is important to have fun and engage students while making sure that while making sure all of the technical pieces of effective phonics instruction are present. I have worked with numerous students on Wyzant, through private tutoring, as a specialist, and as a classroom teacher, and many of my ratings here show how I have engaged my students while improving their phonics skills! Additional gamified and rewards based practice between sessions is always offered!

As a certified teacher (with three certification areas), I have worked in individual and small groups to teach students reading skills, as well as taught or cotaught language arts and English classes for over 10 years in public school systems. My qualifications and experience extend from the basics and building blocks of learning to read all the way through reading comprehension and higher level analysis of texts. I love helping a student connect to what they are reading or writing about as well as to develop a love of reading. Seeing a student gain confidence or make a connection while reading through use of strategies we have discussed is rewarding for both the student and myself! In addition to teaching and work as a specialist, I have done private tutoring to address the reading based common core state standards. My masters degree was specialized in methods of language and literacy instruction. During my teaching career have taken continuing education in systematic, evidenced based methods for teaching reading, and have many engaging resources with which to do so. As a special education teacher, I am able to differentiate the way I teach and individualize my instruction to meet each students' learning style. I have also taken immense professional development certification classes in supporting my post- graduate work in reading comprehension. Above all, I have a passion and drive (and lots of compassion!) to help students to improve in these areas after watching close family members struggle with learning to read, and reading as an adult.

As a certified teacher with over 10 years of experience, I have been trained in and have experience in explicit and systematic phonics instruction and phonemic awareness instruction, as well as linking phonics instruction to reading, writing, and integrating it with more complex aspects of literacy programs. Using word parts, teaching specific spelling patterns for syllables, using word parts (prefixes, roots, suffixes), and then adjusting for irregularities or how words change in sentences can be a complex process. However, when it is broken down in a systematic way, its far less overwhelming! That being said, it is important to have fun and engage students while making sure that while making sure all of the technical pieces of effective phonics instruction are present. I have worked with students on executive functioning since 2010. This has included work on study skills, motivation, planning, organization, prioritization, managing difficulty with attention, and decreasing overwhelm. Through the years I have developed a variety of evidenced based strategies to improve these skills. Each student is different, and improving study skills takes a unique combination of specific approaches, instruction, and strategies specialized to a students' learning profile. I have worked with various age levels, and have many successful high school graduates who stay in touch with me while in college. Building a rapport and working together to achieve goals is extremely important to the process. I look forward to working with you and your students!

Study Skills

Study Skills

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary school students in reading and math, and their application to science and history for 20 years now. I am a certified Elementary (1-6) and Special Education (1-12) and have worked with students for over 10 years in public school systems to address the common core state standards. I have taken continuing education in evidenced based methods for teaching reading, writing, math, science, and social sciences. As a special education teacher, I am able to differentiate the way I teach and individualize my instruction to meet each students' learning style. No matter what your student is struggling with, I have an evidence based and engaging way to teach it to them in their way at their level.
Reading,

Reading

Writing

During my teaching career I have taken continuing education in evidenced based methods for teaching reading, spelling, grammar, and writing (paragraphs, essays, and lengthier papers for secondary and post-secondary education). As a special education teacher, I am able to differentiate the way I teach and individualize my instruction to meet each students' learning style. I also took all of the college level linguistics classes as part of that degree which helped me to learn to break down, analyze, and, and reconstruct words and sentences. I continued on to a masters degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders which focused on the study of language and how to teach others to express themselves in spoken and written language. Since that time, I have spent over 10 years working to help students apply these skills to their coursework. I have also worked with many adults (age 18+) who are writing in college or for other career pursuits. I am both qualified and passionate about teaching English composition.

Overqualified for the job! ; )

Amanda has put so much time and preparation into learning about my 9 year-old son who has executive functioning and speech/language challenges. She read and thoroughly reviewed his evaluation and recommendations from his various therapists, and touched base with me regularly. And that was before the first session! I feel like I hit the jackpot with Amanda. She is a true godsend.

Knowledgeable tutor with great ideas

Amanda has had a significant impact on my daughter for the past several months that they have been working together. She really seems to understand and get to the core of the issue or "learning block" and has different ways to approach learning each concept. She is also very good at articulating her process to my husband and I. It also helps that my daughter looks forward to her sessions since Amanda is so nice and approachable.
