I am committed to building each student's skills and love of learning! This can only be done effectively with mix of knowledge, empathy, trust, and engagement. Your student's strengths, needs, and learning style is what drives my approach to tutoring. The positive rapport I build with each student skyrockets learning and facilitates progress that lasts! I have been teaching for 15 years and holds three teaching certifications that compliment each other. I am an NYU and Providence College Graduate and am Orton Gillingham, Wilson, and Visualizing and Verbalizing trained. I engage in ongoing professional development to build a tool box of the most effective ways to teach my students. As a part of the Math Leadership Team in my district, I find innovative and effective mathematics instructional methods . My creative and evidence based techniques inspire a sense of academic adventure and risk taking.
I have worked with ages six through adult and I have been able to adapt my tutoring approach to each student. What does a session with me look like? I use individualized, specialized, multisensory instruction to help students learn. For some students this involves systematic instruction for spelling, reading, numerical operations, and math problem solving. For other students, I engage as many modalities, senses, and strategies as we can to expand their vocabulary, build comprehension of texts, or synthesize information and write using their own unique voice. My specialized training in reading and writing helps students to see the big picture and/or paint a picture with their words. A typical session with me looks like this:
1.) Goal setting
2.) A math or Literacy activity to activate prior knowledge
3.) An interactive mini-lesson, followed by guided practice
3.) Independent practice with teacher feedback.
4.) Review and reflection.
I look forward to hearing from you about how we can best collaborate towards your student's learning!

I have also taken immense professional development certification classes in supporting my post- graduate work in reading comprehension. Above all, I have a passion and drive (and lots of compassion!) to help students to improve in these areas after watching close family members struggle with learning to read, and reading as an adult.
Spelling

Spelling

As a certified teacher with over 10 years of experience, I have been trained in and have experience in explicit and systematic phonics instruction and phonemic awareness instruction, as well as linking phonics instruction to reading, writing, and integrating it with more complex aspects of literacy programs. Using word parts, teaching specific spelling patterns for syllables, using word parts (prefixes, roots, suffixes), and then adjusting for irregularities or how words change in sentences can be a complex process. However, when it is broken down in a systematic way, its far less overwhelming! That being said, it is important to have fun and engage students while making sure that while making sure all of the technical pieces of effective phonics instruction are present. I have worked with numerous students on Wyzant, through private tutoring, as a specialist, and as a classroom teacher, and many of my ratings here show how I have engaged my students while improving their phonics skills! Through the years I have developed a variety of evidenced based strategies to improve these skills. Each student is different, and improving study skills takes a unique combination of specific approaches, instruction, and strategies specialized to a students' learning profile. I have worked with various age levels, and have many successful high school graduates who stay in touch with me while in college. Building a rapport and working together to achieve goals is extremely important to the process. I look forward to working with you and your students!

Excellent Tutor for Reading Comp - 10 STARS

After vetting several tutors, we chose Amanda to help our 14 yr old daughter with reading comprehension (specifically the LMB Visualizing & Verbalizing program). Starting at the end of June, Amanda has been tutoring our daughter at least 1 hour a day, 5 days a week. Still ongoing. Our daughter has had several tutors in the past (mainly for math); Amanda is the first that she truly likes and has never complained about. Amanda is patient, kind, and truly understands our daughter's learning needs and limitations (including ADHD, dysgraphia, and slow processing). She provides thorough summaries after every tutoring session, keeping us apprised of progress. We intend to continue with Amanda throughout the school year as we pursue completion of the LMB program. Highly recommend!

A Gem of Excellence: Kind, effective, insightful

Amanda is an exceptional tutor who has made a lasting impact on my fifth-grade student! From the moment we started, it was evident that we had found a gem in the world of tutors. Our student's progress with Amanda has been nothing short of extraordinary. Amanda brings a kind-hearted approach, insightful teaching methods, and genuine encouragement. What truly sets Amanda apart is her ability to tailor her lessons to meet our student's needs, but also her innate understanding of how to make complex concepts accessible and engaging, ensuring that each session is not only educational but also enjoyable. She sends detailed reports that give an incredible amount of insights on my student's strengths and areas of opportunity - I've gotten more insights on my child from Amanda than I have from any classroom teacher EVER. The progress my child has made under Amanda's guidance is a testament to her dedication, expertise, and unwavering commitment to inspire a passion for lifelong learning. I cannot recommend Amanda highly enough. Amanda's exceptional skills as an educator, coupled with her kindness, insightfulness, and dedication, have made a profound impact on my child's educational journey. To any parent seeking a tutor who goes above and beyond, look no further than Amanda - just don't take our time slots!

Overqualified for the job! ; )

Amanda has put so much time and preparation into learning about my 9 year-old son who has executive functioning and speech/language challenges. She read and thoroughly reviewed his evaluation and recommendations from his various therapists, and touched base with me regularly. And that was before the first session! I feel like I hit the jackpot with Amanda. She is a true godsend.

Knowledgeable tutor with great ideas

Amanda has had a significant impact on my daughter for the past several months that they have been working together. She really seems to understand and get to the core of the issue or "learning block" and has different ways to approach learning each concept. She is also very good at articulating her process to my husband and I. It also helps that my daughter looks forward to her sessions since Amanda is so nice and approachable.
