Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am qualified to work with students with ADD and ADHD. I am a retired special education teacher with 31 years of teaching experience at the elementary school level. When I work with these type of children, I give plenty of breaks and provide each student with a variety of activities to do. You want to keep their attention by keeping the lessons short. Also the student is rewarded either with verbal praise and/or using a token economy system. At the end of each lesson, the student is able to trade in his tokens to purchase a prize of his choice. I don't use candy as a prize. I usually buy items ftom the dollar store which are appropriate for their age and interest. Since 2005 when I retired I've been privately tutoring students mostly with this type of disability successfully.

Autism

As a special education teacher, I have worked with several autistic students over the years. Presently,I am tutoring 2 students who are in the autistic spectrum. One student is 6 years old and the other student is 14 years old.

Elementary (K-6th)

As a special education resource teacher for the elementary level, I have become very familiar with the academic curriculum for students in grades K-6th. I have tutored individual students to improve their skills in math, reading comprehension, phonics and writing skills. I have had experience in using different instructional strategies to improve any of the skills listed above. I would customized the student's educational program to accommodate his/her own learning style and to help the student realize his/her own potential when it comes to learning new skills.

Elementary Math

I know the math curriculum very well up to 7th grade. I know how to use math teaching strategies to help the student master their math skills for their grade level. I also know how to motivate and help students understand the math concepts to be learned.

Handwriting

I am a special education elementary school teacher with 40 years of teaching experience. I have helped many students develop their handwriting skills, including manuscript and cursive handwriting. It is important that a student be able to write so that other people can read his or her writing. When I have had students who need to work on this type of skill, I have received advice from the occupational therapist. The O.T.'s instructional strategies have been very helpful! One example of using these strategies is using a slant board when writing. Often I would use a large binder when a slant board was not available. Writing on a slanted platform motivates the student to hold the writing instrument correctly.

Reading

Reading ia an essential skill to have for a better life. Being able to read fluently and being able to understand the content of what you have read is essential to using this skill effectively.I have helped students to become very good readers. Allow me to help you or your students to become effective readers.

Special Needs

I have both my master's degree and bachelor's degree in Special Education. My teaching experiences with students have been at the preschool level and the elementary school level. I have taught in the public school system for 31 years. I am very knowledgeable in knowing which types of accommodations are needed to make a student successful in the classroom. I have also worked with speech therapists and occupational therapists. I have relied on their advise to enable students to
be able to achieve their academic goals. Kathy

Study Skills

As a resource teacher at the elementary school level, I am well qualified to show students how to improve their study skills and to have fun while studying.
