ADHD

ADHD

I am qualified to work with students with ADD and ADHD. I am a retired special education teacher with 31 years of teaching experience at the elementary school level. When I work with these type of children, I give plenty of breaks and provide each student with a variety of activities to do. You want to keep their attention by keeping the lessons short. Also the student is rewarded either with verbal praise and/or using a token economy system. At the end of each lesson, the student is able to trade in his tokens to purchase a prize of his choice. I don't use candy as a prize. I usually buy items ftom the dollar store which are appropriate for their age and interest. Since 2005 when I retired I've been privately tutoring students mostly with this type of disability successfully.
Elementary (K-6th)

Elementary (K-6th)

As a special education resource teacher for the elementary level, I have become very familiar with the academic curriculum for students in grades K-6th. I have tutored individual students to improve their skills in math, reading comprehension, phonics and writing skills. I have had experience in using different instructional strategies to improve any of the skills listed above. I would customized the student's educational program to accommodate his/her own learning style and to help the student realize his/her own potential when it comes to learning new skills.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I know the math curriculum very well up to 7th grade. I know how to use math teaching strategies to help the student master their math skills for their grade level. I also know how to motivate and help students understand the math concepts to be learned.
English

English

My strongest skill is to help students with reading and spelling difficulties to improve their skills. I’ve been using the Orton Gillingham phonics program during these types of lessons successfully. The program is so specific that it includes every type of spelling skill that a student needs to learn. I have also had experience working with three adults that have this type of spelling difficulty successfully. I have two programs online that I can use with anyone who would like to have lessons using this phonics program.
Handwriting

Handwriting

I am a special education elementary school teacher with 40 years of teaching experience. I have helped many students develop their handwriting skills, including manuscript and cursive handwriting. It is important that a student be able to write so that other people can read his or her writing. When I have had students who need to work on this type of skill, I have received advice from the occupational therapist. The O.T.'s instructional strategies have been very helpful! One example of using these strategies is using a slant board when writing. Often I would use a large binder when a slant board was not available. Writing on a slanted platform motivates the student to hold the writing instrument correctly.

She was great with my 8yr old

My 8yr old was engaged and Kathleen was able to break thru to him despite his initial unwillingness to get extra tutoring. Impressed with Kathleen's arsenal in her bag of tricks. She came well prepared to deal with a reluctant learner.

Kathleen makes learning fun

Kathleen has the patience of a saint. Our student can be quite challenging. Kathleen keeps her focused. She rewards her when she completes her assignment and has helped her to understand in a way we have not be able to achieve on our own.

Kathy's My Gal

Kathy has now been helping me with my Grammar and vowels. I was very impressed when Kathy came to my house with brand new books that she had purchased. I thought she wasn't really quite sure what direction I wanted to head in, but she came prepared with everything. Kathy is personable and we have formed a very good relationship. She also has a very patient mannerism and she likes to focus in on getting the most help in such a short period of time. I would recommend her to anyone needing additional help.
