Dear Nursing Student
I am glad that you stopped by to read my profile. I would be honored to support you in reaching your goal of becoming a nurse. My name is Barbara Helming and I live in Connecticut. I have been an RN for 42 years!! Nursing has been an amazing career for me and there are seemingly endless options out there for you.

I have done patient/family teaching, staff education and precepting for my entire career. I recently worked as a classroom and clinical instructor in the LPN program at Lincoln Technical Institute for four years. The subjects I taught were adult/child sensory, GU, hematology/oncology, pain, neurology, male reproduction and STIs. My Lincoln Tech experience really allowed me to really hone my teaching skills both in class and with individual students needing additional support to be successful. As part of licensure preparation, I supported students in doing ATI prior to graduation. Some students struggled with ATI and needed help developing the ATI mindset and understanding how to read the questions. Trust me, ATI is a skill to master and the key to success!

When I first meet with a student for tutoring, I like to ask the student, "What is the hardest part of this for you?" The answer to that question lets me focus the session on how to guide the student to success. I always appreciate examples the student can bring for us to review together.

Full disclosure - I have quirky sense of humor! Former students have told me some of the "weird" things I said in class came back to them to help them with NCLEX questions. I also try to stamp out memorization when we can make sense of the information. Love those ah hah moments :-) Making sense means understanding!

I look forward to supporting you in entering this highly regarded profession. WE NEED YOU!
