I specialize in one-on-one tutoring to help students read, write, and comprehend more effectively. I love working with students of all ages and levels to help boost their reading, writing, and comprehension skills--but more importantly, to teach them to be lifelong readers and learners in general.

I worked at Lindamood Bell Learning Processes for two years, where I was trained to teach reading from the ground up: building an awareness of letter sounds, familiarizing students with common prefixes, suffixes, vowel rules and expectancies, learning to recognize words, and working on fluency and contextual reading in long-form pieces of writing. I've also worked as a private tutor for more than a year, focusing on improving student's writing by bolstering their awareness of grammar and sentence structure, but also by encouraging them to take joy in the acts of both reading and writing.

I graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor's degree in English, and received a Master's degree in Creative Writing from Columbia University in 2016.

Patient, Enthusiastic, & Prepared Tutor

Our second grader absolutely loved her first lesson with Dane! Not only did Dane thoroughly assess her and determine clear short-term and long-term objectives, but he also made her feel comfortable through playing educational games and keeping her laughing. We are confident we chose a great tutor who will help her in her path to becoming a fluent reader. When I told her I would give Dane a 5-star rating, she said "No, give him a 10!" Thank you so much, Dane, and we are already looking forward to the next lesson.

A Diamond in the Rough: Real Learning, Real Results

I'm a 24-year-old untraditional student and, to be real, I’ve always felt spelling was one of my biggest academic weaknesses. I used to hate it. No matter how hard I tried to teach myself, nothing would stick, I just couldn’t comprehend it. Calling Dane a “good teacher” would honestly be an understatement. He’s strategic, customizes his lessons to fit the student, and always aims for real results. Dane isn’t the type to follow a generic teaching manual. He delivers quality service and genuinely sets his students up for success. He’s a diamond in the rough the kind of investment that doesn’t feel like a burden but like real progress toward academic achievement. Dane teaches with depth. He doesn’t skim the surface or rely on memorization tricks. He trains your brain to actually understand and retain what you’re learning. If you’re serious about learning, Dane is the one you want in your corner.

Enthusiastic and encouraging tutor!

Dane has done only two sessions with my 2nd grade daughter so far, and her confidence in her ability to read has already increased. Dane is extremely engaging and encouraging and my daughter looks forward to her tutoring sessions. He quickly assessed her skill level and made a clear, focused plan on how to get her to not only improve her reading skills, but also cultivate a love of reading. Highly recommend Dane!

Excellent

Explained the concepts well and met my son at his level. Wonderful experience and my son seems genuinely engaged the entire time. We are excited to have him continue his lessons.

experienced and good energy to connect with student

Dane taught my son reading by creating images in the brain. He tailored to my son's needs and substained my son's attention with his positive energy. We are glad to find him as my son's tutor.

good teaching style

The kid likes Dane’s teaching style! He enjoys the class. And Dane is easy to work with too. The other day we missed the lesson for somehow and kept him waiting for quite a while and he remained very nice and rescheduled the lesson without charging for the missing one.

Very Adaptable and Patient Tutor

My daughter has been working with Dane on basic reading and phonics for three months now. During that time we have transitioned from the regular learning schedule of daily school (in addition to tutoring) to summer vacation and we have moved halfway across the country and taken breaks for summer camp, etc. Dane has done an excellent job of adjusting the lesson content to include review and new materials depending on how frequently he is able to meet with my daughter and her ability (or sometimes lack thereof) to focus on the session that day. This adaptability has been key to my daughter continuing to advance in her phonics and reading skills even when life has been a little crazy. In addition, Dane does a great job of building a rapport with her. To describe her as reluctant to do reading tutoring at first would be an understatement; there were a few times she would end up sobbing in the floor at the thought of having to try to read. Now, every morning, she asks me about every five minutes “is it time for reading yet?”

Energetic and Knowledgeable

Dane had a great lesson with my son. He was able to pick up on my son’s learning style and what he need as far as practice is conceded. I’m excited to see my sons growth.
