About Edwin

About me:

I am a senior undergrad studying ACS Biochemistry at Western Connecticut State University. In August, 2017 I will be starting a combined DMD/PhD program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, pursuing a PhD in Organic/Medicinal Chemistry and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree.

I am very passionate about teaching. I have taught private violin and viola lessons for many years, and my students are now musicians that play at gigs and orchestras. Working as a Teacher Assistant for General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and College Algebra at WCSU has motivated me to pursue a career in dental education, where my goal is to become a faculty member at a dental school and provide research opportunities to future dental students.

My philosophy:

We learn to share and give back.
We learn to understand the world.
We learn from being challenged.
We learn from our failures.

Everyone has the capacity and the right to learn and understand. Our brain is like a muscle. When we begin to exercise a muscle, we feel sore and tired. However, with hard work and motivation we can learn more efficiently and share knowledge with others.

College Coursework:

General Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I and II, Analytical Chemistry, Concepts of Physical Chemistry, Biochemistry I and II, Physical Chemistry I, Medicinal Chemistry, and Calculus I and II.

Policies:

Parents are free to observe lessons. I can be reached by phone or email (only once payment information has been provided) for any questions or a cancellation. However, I must be notified within 2 hours. I am also willing to make up any tutoring session for weather conditions/court/family emergency/sickness/religious events. If a session is cancelled without a valid excuse, or if it is skipped, there will be a penalty fee of half the hourly rate.

Approach:

If the parent and/or individual agrees, I will provide challenging homework assignments to complete based on the examples I provide. I will spend the time necessary every session to review prior homework and answer any questions before moving on to the next concept. I also ask for students to explain to me how they approached a problem. If they can do that and understand, then they have mastered the concept.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored many students at Western Connecticut State University in Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry to prepare for their exams. My students have demonstrate lots of confidence with plane and coordinate geometry. I know many strategies to help dominate the ACT Math section, such as process of elimination. I promise to make problem solving a breeze.

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra 1 to all ages, from my younger cousins in middle school to college students taking Algebra in the Math Emporium at WCSU. I have tutored Algebra for more than 5 years.

Algebra 2

I have tutored Algebra 2 in the Math Emporium at WCSU for 3 years. I work through homework problems and challenge students with variations of problems they have done. I like to be creative in my teaching by drawing world applications.

Calculus

I received a 4 in the AP Calculus AB exam my senior year in high school and received an A in Calculus II at Western Connecticut State University.

Chemistry

I took Honors Chemistry and AP/UCONN Chemistry (earned a 4) in High School, and received an A in General Chemistry II at WCSU. I participated in the WCSU Chemistry team, whom won the Mole Bowl Competition this year against Fairfield University and Sacred Heart University. I am pursuing a degree in Chemistry, which hopefully explains my passion for it. I was Teacher Assistant for General Chemistry II at WCSU for two years.

Geometry

I took Geometry my freshman year in high school. I just find it very interesting to learn about the various ways we can look at geometrical objects, and how we can solve for angles, sides, areas, perimeters, volumes, arc lengths, and more. I tutor by demonstrating the various ways in solving for a quantity, and explaining which one is the most efficient. This subject has to be taught with graphs and drawings.

Organic Chemistry

I received a perfect score (30) on the Organic Chemistry Section of the Dental Admissions Test. I was a Teacher Assistant for Organic Chemistry I at Western Connecticut State University. I have done extensive organic chemistry lab research while at WCSU and at Harvard University.

Prealgebra

I have tutored pre-Algebra in the past to my cousin and she has enjoyed the examples I have given her. I challenge students by having them explain to me examples, and explore possibilities in solving problems.

SAT Math

I have tutored many students at Western Connecticut State University in Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry to prepare for their exams. I know many strategies to help dominate the SAT Math section, such as process of elimination. I have helped my cousin do well on her SAT math section. I promise to make problem solving a breeze.

Trigonometry

I tutor trigonometry through very visual examples. Trigonometry can seem intimidating because it is a step up from Geometry, but I will help you understand the importance of its concepts and connect it to the real world. Trigonometry is very important for future math courses, such as Calculus. I have tutored Trigonometry to 3 of my younger cousins in the past, and they have all dominated the course. I am determined to help you succeed!

Violin

I have been playing the violin for 14 years and have instructed 10 violin students. I studied violin with Eric (former U.S. cultural ambassador to Soviet Union and Professor) and Katherine Lewis. I also studied under Patti Kilroy, a violinist and PhD candidate at NYU.

One of my students has auditioned and been accepted to the Violin Performance degree program at FAU. I was concertmaster during high school and was assistant concertmaster in the WCSU Symphony Orchestra.
