Diane S. tutored my daughter in SAT Math. She has the gift to be able to identify where weaknesses lie and sets specific goals to overcome those weaknesses. Not only was basic and advanced math reviewed so that my daughter was refreshed in all areas, but she also took the time to work through different strategies for solving various types of problems, which is so important when taking a test such as the math SAT. Diane has a wonderfully pleasant personality, is very patient, well organized, and brings forth a lot of expertise. Diane always communicates to me at the end of the lesson what she went over, what review is still needed and the progress that is being made. Her expertise in the subject area, her teaching strategies and goal setting skills really set her apart from others. I highly recommend Diane S.
Diane demonstrated knowledge of the course material necessary for the Education Praxis Review. She helped me to better my understanding of algebra, geometry and overall number sense. She is kind, patient and a pleasure to work with!
Diane tackled topics I was struggling with and took her time with me and made sure I understood what we were going over. I appreciate her caring tone and patience
This client was tutored in college chemistry for the CLEP exam. Thanks Hayley!
Among the many math/science tutors that I have hired, Diane is by far the best. She has the latest inside news on the new PSAT and SAT formatting, and wastes no time in teaching my child invaluable mathematic skills and tips for all standardized tests. She pinpoints the problems, even during the first lesson, and wastes no time on worksheets during the session. Instead, she assigns them for homework to retain time for teaching. I value this method of teaching, which is definitely not easy to find these days.
Diane was very helpful with preparing my son for his final exam in chemistry. She was able to pinpoint his challenges and explain difficult concepts so he had a much clearer understanding of the subject matter.
Diane was able to break concepts down into smaller chunks so that I could easily relate to them. She is an outstanding tutor.
This client was tutored in Praxis math. Thanks Danielle!
Diane has worked wonderfully with our son to help improve his math skills and his approach to taking a test.
This student was tutored in elementary math. Thanks Russell!
My son has gained so much confidence being tutored by Diane. She is very patient and has helped him to understand the concepts underlying the problems he is attempting. I would not hesitate in recommending Diane to any student.
Diane has been a strong support for our son's struggles in Algebra 2. She knows the material well and often brings creative perspectives that help him see the content in a way that clicks for him. Perhaps most important, he enjoys the sessions and remains engaged throughout each.
Diane was willing to help my daughter understand what she needed to for her AP chemistry exam at short notice. She was thorough and friendly.
She is clearly a very experienced teacher. I was very impressed by her ability in one lesson to hone in on what needs to be done to get up to speed on the this and future material, and her warm and kind demeanor. After several sessions, a huge improvement in test grades!
I would highly recommend Diane as a tutor. She helped me tremendously. She's very patient and has a great way of explaining math concepts so you remember them! She helped me to not only pass the Praxis, but to really knock it out of the park. Whatever test you are practicing for she will come prepared and ready to help you. She is a great find!
I had studied for the GMAT all summer long by myself, I bought full sets of textbooks and spent 3 months putting off job interviews so I could devote 100% of my time to the GMAT. Despite the focused effort, I was not achieving the high scores that I yearned for.
I met with 2 previous tutors before Diane and they simply just didn't do it for me. One was too slow and made it very difficult to meet up, and the other was very intelligent, yet he could not relay his intelligence into teaching.
Then I met Diane, and right from the beginning she made a positive impression on me. She was always replying to my messages in a speedy manner, she understood that I was crunched for time as my test date was approaching and went out of her way to help me. Originally, I thought I would only need 1 or 2 sessions total with Diane to go over some difficult material, but after meeting with her for the first time and discovering how great of a tutor she was, I scheduled 2 sessions a week for the remaining month!
Diane is a universal tutor, literally any student with any preferred learning method, she will accommodate you to make sure you leave a session feeling supremely confident on the material you covered. She is kind, patient, but most of all boundlessly intelligent. I would send her difficult 700-800 difficulty level Quant questions, and the next day she would have pages and pages of thoughtful explanations on how to arrive at the correct answer! She is the ideal tutor, and the real deal.
Thank you for everything Diane!
We feel very lucky to have found Diane. She is not only a skilled math tutor, but she is patient, kind, gentle, and understanding. And the best part is she has a sense of humor. Math is a difficult subject for my daughter, and Diane is making it so much easier. Thanks, Diane!
Diane was very friendly, nice, patient and most importantly helpful. I only had one week to prepare for the GRE and she worked with me to make sure I was comfortable with the most important topics that would be on the test. I highly recommend Diane!
Diane S. did a great job on tutoring my daughter for SAT math. She knows exactly where her week points are by evaluating using various techniques.
She does not waste the student's time if the student is very much capable of doing in certain area, in fact she enhances the area where she needed to work the most.
She gives her suggestions and give her homework, engages her very well. Diane is an excellent tutor for Math and not just limited to SAT.
She is easy to reach and easy to work around her schedule. I would recommend her very strongly to anyone for tutoring.
Diane is very keyed into the SAT and ACT tests. My daughter needs practice for the SAT this fall. Diane has long-term experience and knows the old tests backwards and forwards. She teaches students to recognize categories of test questions and the best strategies for solving them. She uses official practice tests as well as her own stock of problems to focus on areas in which the student is weak. It seems like the most promising test prep method, better than group sessions and better than tutoring by all-subject tutors. If you live in or near northern Fairfield County, we highly recommend her.
Diane has been a marvelous tutor for our son. She is highly competent and experienced, and was able to hone in on our son's weak areas in Algebra 2 right from the first lesson. Not only has she helped him with math, she has managed to do so in a way that has kept him engaged and alert. No small feat. Diane is an absolute professional in every way. Highly recommended.
Our son, a high school junior, has worked with Diane for several months now and I only wish we had found her sooner! Right at the start Diane took the time to assess our son's individual learning needs and zeroed in on key areas for skill building and development. Her individualized approach has resulted in increased test scores and grades in school, building confidence, and improved performance on the SAT. I would highly recommend Diane to anyone looking to provide additional educational support to their son or daughter.
Ms. S tutored my son in AP Chemistry. He found her very helpful. As a parent, I found Ms. S to be very professional. She was flexible and very accommodating when it comes to scheduling the sessions. She always provided timely write-up on what she covered after each session and looked ahead to what's next for the upcoming session. I wished I had started the tutoring earlier in the school year. I will definitely contact Ms. S when my younger child takes AP Chemistry.
It's simple. My daughter's grade went from D's and C's to A's. Diane knows how to help kids learn and do well in school.
This student was tutored in chemistry and geometry.
Diane tutored my daughter in math for the SAT. She was able to guide my daughter through many problematic formulas with simple guidelines. My daughter gained confidence and improved he score by 70 points in just 6 sessions. Diane is polite, organized, and reliable.
We first reached out to WyzAnt for my daughter in prep for the HSPT and were fortunate enough to have found Diane. My daughter's first impression was that she felt really challenged by Diane; and she is just what my daughter required!
Diane is exceptionally talented in her subject, and always did her best to tweak her schedule to accommodate our needs. We will look to Diane again for math tutoring in the near future when my daughter goes to high school. Thank you!
Diane breaks everything down into basics so that my child can understand the concepts - not just the mechanics. She is very adaptive to my son's style of learning and really tries to understand how he perceives and processes information so that she can customize her lesson for him. He received a 90 on his latest mid-term!
I have been working with Diane for the past few weeks doing Teas math testing review and I am very satisfied. She is very patient when teaching. She has a good way of making you understand at your own level and pace. I would highly recommend her as a math tutor.
Diane is a great tutor. My son enjoys her lessons very much. She is patient and tries her best to accommodate your needs. I would highly recommend her.
These sessions are in algebra 2 and honors chemistry.
Thank you, Jimmy!
She's very pleasant to work with. She was patient with me and when I got stuck or didn't understand the problems no matter how many times she showed me, she still help'd me through till I got the answer. Very pleased with working with her!
This student is preparing for the ASVAB.
Thank you, Erik!
Having a tough algebra class this year, she helps me understand better and get higher grades. She's easy to talk to and be with.
It's been two months since Diane has been working with our son and he has been doing tremendously well in his chemistry class. He has achieved the best grades so far than any of his other high school science classes. Diane is patient and knows how to teach science in a way to help students develop deeper understanding, and critically think about the purpose of what they are learning.
Diane was very thorough and knowledgeable coupled with a great personality and friendly manner made it a very positive experience.
This student was preparing for the ACT in science and math, and now the SAT in math.
Thank you, Tammy!
Diane has a knack for teaching students at all levels. She understands their frustrations in dealing with difficult concepts and is excellent at teaching them new skills to understand these concepts. She is very patient and kind and my son really enjoys working with her. In addition, she is responsible and dedicated in helping her students advance their learning ability. I would highly recommend Diane for other students looking to improve upon their skills.
This student is being tutored in Algebra 2, as well as preparing for the SAT in math.
Thank you, Lori!
Diane has been providing tutoring in ISEE math. Diane's gentle manner and experience are really helping our daughter to brush up on old math concepts, solidify currents ones, and understand the unique (and tricky) aspects of doing math on this test. Diane provides detailed and constructive reports after each tutoring session.
Diane is helping us with physics. Since we have been getting help in algebra and geometry, this transition to physics is helpful.
I was almost in tears within the first 15 minutes. I'm 43 and have not looked at a math textbook in over 20 yrs. I was going to give up and scratch the idea of taking my entrance exam for school. However, that all quickly changed with Diane. I went from being clueless to quickly learning the information. The math problems went from being challenging to EASY! I will need many more hours of help from Diane, but I am confident that I will succeed. Diane has an ability to transform her skills and teaching style to the student's learning ability.
This student was preparing for the TEAS math exam.
Thank you, Nancy!
Diane was wonderful-- she really helped me understand mathematical concepts that I was not comfortable with prior to tutoring with her. She aided me in learning how to read word problems, which was my biggest struggle. She was also good with science content, and helped me understand bigger picture ideas in order to prepare for my Praxis II Exams. She was very patient and was a great teacher to work with because she explained things systematically and clearly.
Overall, this was a very beneficial experience that I hope will pay off.
Diane and my daughter got along great from the beginning! Diane is very patient and ensured my daughter understood a concept before moving on. She made sure to give my daughter tips before she left. I would definitely recommend Diane!!!
These sessions are in algebra, and the student will take the NYS Regents this year.
Thank you, Donna!
Diane is very experienced and comes very well prepared for each lesson. She teaches her students numerous tips and procedures how to avoid making mistakes. We look forward to working with her throughout the year.
These sessions are in Algebra 2, SAT preparation and occasionally chemistry.
Thank you, Gregory
Diane is a good tutor with lots of patience dealing with students who are not necessarily "top" students! My daughter feels as if she has learned ACT strategies that will help her to succeed on the upcoming test.
Diane is a great math tutor! My gre math scores started low and after only 3 reviews with her I saw great improvement. I highly recommend Diane.
Our daughter came away from the first lesson and said "she is REALLY good!" I learned so much in those two hours than I had in school and Diane made it so clear and simple.
These sessions were in SAT/ACT preparation.
My daughter is enjoying working with Diane. We are in early stages but thus far it seems to be a success. I will write in more depth as we proceed but so far it is working out well.
Update: After a few sessions with Diane, our daughter's math skills have noticeably improved. Thank you, Diane, for your mentorship. We will be in touch.
These sessions were for SSAT prep.
Thank you, Alex!
We have been working with Diane for some time now. I began using her to prepare my son for his SAT's. The results were amazing. Not only did his scores improve, but so did his confidence. When my daughter was having trouble with algebra and geometry, we didn't hesitate for one moment. I contacted Diane and she began tutoring my daughter. Diane is so kind and patient, that tutoring has become a welcoming coaching session for my daughter. She never complains and looks forward to spending time with Diane. Once again, her confidence has become evident and her grades have improved! I would highly recommend Diane!
Grades and confidence continue to improve. Furthermore, Diane looks to the future and provides my daughter with what to expect and a plan to prepare for what is coming ahead.
The new year begins and we look forward to work with Diane again.
Diane was able to identify my daughter's specific weaknesses and to focus and teach her strategies to compensate and manage her time in preparation for the ACT. She is thorough, easy to work with, reliable, and provides excellent feedback regarding the lessons. I recommend her highly! Diane continues to do an amazing job individualizing her instruction to my daughter's needs. I couldn't be more pleased with her tutoring. Diane is professional and knowledgeable. I recommend her highly. Another great, individualized lesson. I am continuing with Diane even though my daughter has already taken her ACT. She is working on final exam preparation and continues to be an invaluable resource!
Diane has been very patient with my daughter and put in a very long session to prep her for her final exam. The extra time really paid off as my daughter did well on the exam!
These sessions were in 8th grade math.
Thank you, Karen!
Hi Diane. It was a pleasure meeting with you today. You are extremely patient and precise in your instructions. I will do my utmost to follow your instructions and to double check my answers.
You sent me away feeling so much better about what I need to do and cover in order to be successful.
And, thank you very much for your encouragement. It is greatly appreciated.
I look forward to next Monday, same place, same time.
This student is preparing for a college math placement exam as well as the TEAS V. (Thank you Michele!)
We asked Diane to tutor our son in preparation for his SAT and ACT. As we felt the instruction he was getting at High School was not getting through to him leading up to the exams so we saw the need for a personal tutor. Diane met that need. The feedback from my son on the initial session was very positive and he is actually looking forward to the next session. Well done Diane!
My daughter came home from school after having one session with Diane and said she was answering the questions in algebra before the teacher finished the equations on the board! This was a huge boost for my daughters self esteem! I just can't wait to see what two sessions will do! I think Diane is awesome!
Before the first session with Diane, my son attempted to get out of the tutoring. Amazingly enough, afterwards he said he may need 2 hour sessions. I am so pleased with Diane's knowledge and demeanor. A wonderful first tutoring experience. Thank you, Diane.
Another successful session! Thank you, Diane.
I wish I had hired Diane sooner. It is money well spent! Thank you, again.
After each lesson my son is energized and very happy. Diane seems to be a very positive influence and inspirational. Thank you.
Again, a pleasure to see Diane and my son sitting together and working hard. Thank you for the last minute time change.
This student is preparing for the SAT. (Thank you Joan!)
My son really likes Diane and he IS learning. Boys can be tough so I feel I got very lucky when I found Diane. No one told me about her, I read her profile and had a good feeling and thankfully that feeling turned out to be correct. We are very, very pleased with Diane. I wish we had started sooner.
It has been a few weeks now and Diane continues to see what is needed and Michael is coming along nicely.
This student is being tutored in Algebra 2/ Trig, as well as preparing for the SAT, ACT and NY State Regents.
Diane S. met with my daughter six times over her March break to work on SAT Math prep. The feedback about her progress for each session and the test-taking exercises done at home was extremely detailed and helpful. We were very pleased with our entire experience!
We hired Diane as a tutor this summer to assist in developing a strategy to improve my daughter’s math/SAT scores. Diane began by reviewing and assessing my daughter’s basic math knowledge/skills then developed a plan to address areas requiring improvement. My daughter is becoming more confident in the areas of math that Diane has reviewed with her. I highly recommend Diane as a tutor.
Diane helped me understand 4 years worth of high school math in a short period of time. It wasn't easy at all but she was very patient with me and even worked overtime without charging for it! She will be very understanding to your situation and work hard to make sure you get ahead. Thanks Diane.
This student is preparing the the GED.
I do believe that my daughter is trying hard to get more familiar with the math. She tells me that your explain the problems well. I have credit the account so you can continue to help her. Thanks.
This student was preparing for the SAT, math.
Thank you, Tino!
Diane came to us to help my daughter with her (lack of) math skills for the SAT exam. She worked very hard to help my daughter understand the concepts, even showed her ways to actually get thru the test itself. Diane helped her build her own confidence levels, so we hope the score will increase.
Diane has a positive attitude, not a hard old-school approach, and was very accommodating. A great tutor, glad we had her!
Diane has been a great tutor for my daughter. She is patient, friendly and thorough. My child always leaves feeling more confident about the material and never complains about going to the sessions.
If I were to describe Diane in one word, it would be patient. Never met someone so knowledgeable about accuplacer tests or algebra in my whole student career. Diane was very reasonable when it came to price, and teaching always came first. She even exceeded the time we agreed upon just to make sure what I learned stuck.
She also tutored my sister, and when they were done the first text my sister sent to me was "she's awesome!" Believe me when I say Diane is an Ace, you can't go wrong.
This is an update of our experience with Diane, the tutor we chose to work with our College student that had such a delay in Math we did not think it would be possible to pass a College Algebra course. Diane exceeded all our expectations. She was quick to accommodate our daughter's schedule, never missed a class and we had no problem getting in touch with her. Diane was able to unlock my daughter's phobia with Math, she was able to actually teach her valuable steps that ultimately helped her understand the subject and was instrumental in my daughter's success. She passed her course and what is most important is that she gained a new confidence in herself that will allow her to move forward with all areas of study. We can't thank Diane enough for what she has done and how easy she was to work with. Diane's vast knowledge and patience is what made all the difference in our daughter's life. We thank you Diane!!!
My daughters were very skeptical about being tutored in their least favorite subject for a test they are dreading. After only one lesson, they feel encouraged and a lot less intimidated. They both felt Diane is very nice, supportive and knowledgeable. They are actually looking forward to working with her. What a relief for me!
Diane has continued to be extremely helpful and supportive. My daughters are feeling much more comfortable about the upcoming SAT test. I'm glad she suggested starting the lessons when we did otherwise it would have been a lot more pressure. The pace has worked out well and the girls are much more confident. One will be taking the test next week. We are eager to see her performance.
Once again Diane has been a real added value in helping my daughters build their math skills and confidence. We can't thank her enough for all her insights and helpfulness.
Diane is amazing. She is patient and very helpful to anyone who struggles with math. Highly recommended to people who just need a little encouragement with great teaching strategies!
Best tutor I've hired to date! Her detailed review is very informative. She was very patient with my son and able to help him begin to unravel confusing concepts. Thank you!
Diane is a wonderful tutor with broad knowledge of math SAT/ACT type and weight of questions. She can also identify math "blocks" very quickly and find problem solving methods that work. I highly recommend Diane!
After all a few hour long sessions, Diane managed to tutor my son's way to an 80 point increase on the math portion of the SAT. Thanks, Diane.
Diane is wonderful! She made me feel a lot more confident about taking the Praxis math test. She works with me step-by-step to make sure I have the skills I need to apply myself when taking the test. I love her sense of humor, encouragement. It is always difficult doing something that you are not completely comfortable with in front of another person, but Diane is very patient. My favorite thing about Diane is the way she breaks down the math problems, while many people follow a series of “steps” when doing math problems Diane looks at the important key components in the problem and breaks it down into a better understanding way, she also had many helpful tricks that will save a lot of time when solving certain difficult problems.
I hired Diane to tutor my 8th grade son in Algebra. He was really struggling and had dropped down to the D range in the class. Within a few sessions Diane had caught him up with the rest of the class and brought his grade up to the B+ range. He is very comfortable working with Diane and has gained so much confidence in the class. I wish I had hired her much soon. I strongly recommend her for your child.
Diane has been meeting with my daughter weekly, leading up to the June SAT. I cannot say enough positive things about her tutoring ability! Besides being a wonderfully nice person (which she is), she has given my daughter invaluable strategies to work through SAT math problems, and also taught her the art of "skipping" questions with discrimination. Most of all, though, she has given my daughter confidence in her own abilities, which is something she did not have before. I would recommend her VERY highly to anyone seeking a math tutor for their child. Thanks, Diane, for all your help!
She was super helpful, increased my confidence and helped me know what I was doing on the test! She was very kind and really helped specify what I needed more help on. She also gave me a lot of test taking strategies which was really helpful when actually taking the test!
This student was preparing for the SAT.
Diane is a lovely person and a great tutor. She has helped my daughter improve her math grade. I would highly recommend her services.
These sessions are in Geometry.
I was looking for a math tutor for my 11th grade daughter to help her brush up on her math skills prior to taking the SAT test. I reviewed Diane's profile and felt that she would be a good match. I contacted her and she replied in a timely fashion. Diane was enthusiastic, upbeat and had many good ideas on how to get my daughter up to speed. She wasn't about the "quick" sale. She offered a variety of options to fit the pocketbook of the parent and I really appreciated that. So many times the SAT prep is all about the money, so having the opportunity to have a qualified professional work one on one with your child and also offer a reasonably priced service was invaluable. My daughter has enjoyed working with Diane, she feels a lot more confident with her math skills and is much less nervous about taking the SAT test.
Diane S. is very patient with my child. She understands when the concept is not fully understood by my child. She will then find a new method or example to explain the concept with my child until she understands the math. My child feels like she is making great headway in her math knowledge and is more confident. Her math grades are improving and she no longer dreads doing her math homework. My child enjoys her tutoring sessions. I highly recommend Diane as a tutor.
These sessions are in Algebra 1, middle school.
Diane tutored my twin sons in SAT math. The children say their scores have improved on sample tests, and they are learning a lot. Diane is always very punctual and comes well equipped with work materials. She appears well organized in her presentations. I would recommend her to other parents and students who need help in this area.
Diane was great! She helped my son to grasp various math concepts on the ACT; the difference was almost immediate. Diane was flexible, gave us great materials to work with and gave my son great strategies to use. I highly recommend her!
Diane has been great and our son has said that he is gaining a lot of insight into the SAT testing process. Diane has been on time to the scheduled appointments and very accommodating to our schedule.
Diane really helps me identify my strengths and weaknesses in preparing for the mathematics portion of the SAT. She is very patient and helps build my confidence in my ability to do math problems that may appear difficult at first. Overall, I feel I will do well on the exam because of her tutoring. Highly Recommended!
My son went up 10 points in Math and 30 points on the English section!
These sessions were for a student hoping for an even higher score than he had on the SAT. He had more room to improve in the verbal sections, for which I gave him pointers, than in the math, and did very well.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Beyond understanding the required math, scoring well on the ACT has to do conquering those careless errors, because there is no partial credit on the ACT, - and being able to read and understand word problems. I can help on both fronts. I review the math covered by the ACT - algebra, geometry, data and statistics, and some trig/advanced alg 2. Even for those who have not yet had alg 2/trig, the ACT is very predictable, so we can prepare a student for the types of questions the ACT asks in those areas. More importantly, I teach a method to read word problems and quickly and confidently write down the equation to be solved. No more having your head spin wondering, "what are they asking me?". We'll build basic skills and talk about strategies to move through the test to maximize your score. Check out the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you!
Many students find the ACT science the hardest part of the test. Not only is it at the end of a very long test, some students find science to be hard - which adds to the anxiety, AND you really have to rush to get through the 7 passages and 40 questions in only 35 minutes. Sounds impossible! The key is knowing some strategies to manage your time and being familiar with the types of questions and answer formats the ACT presents. I can help you get through it! Please see the reviews on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good match for your tutoring needs.
In Algebra 1, students are really learning the art of problem solving. Compared to previous math, problems get more complicated, both in structure and presentation. Logic skills are required in addition to the arithmetic skills taught up to this point. Complications arise when the foundational math is not strong, and/or there is difficulty in understanding the questions (often presented as word problems). Whether you need remedial help, or are looking to get ahead, I can help! I have been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. Starting with your current math, or going back as far as needed, we will build skill and confidence in algebra 1. Please take a look at the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you!
Algebra II can be tough! Many unfamiliar concepts are introduced as students are being prepared for trig and calculus. Any weaknesses in previous math courses are magnified, since these now are mere tools as the subject matter advances. I can help! I've had much success tutoring algebra II. I have been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. We break down concepts into their simplest blocks, and I strive for students to understand WHY they are doing what they are doing, not just HOW. This leads to a deeper understanding and a new ease of application of the skills! Please take a look at the reviews left for me on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you!
Thank you for your interest in the ASVAB. In appreciation and recognition of your commitment, I am happy to offer a 20% discount off my base rate, in addition to any WyzAnt discounts you qualify for. (Extended travel surcharge may still apply.) My focus on ASVAB preparation is on the Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge sections. Particularly if it has been a long time since you've taken a math test, I can quickly get you up to speed in the most frequently tested math strands. I can identify weak areas and teach the concepts in a way to make them understandable and memorable, helping you reach your goals.
Chemistry can be a tough subject, because it introduces a whole new vocabulary, has difficult concepts, and couples all that with quite a bit of math. I hold a Ph.D. in chemistry and am currently tutoring several students in general/honors/AP chemistry. I have been told I am very patient and can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. Please take a look at the comments left for me by clients on my full WyzAnt profile to see if I would be a good fit for you.
High School Placement Exams such as the COOP and HSPT can be nerve wracking for students. These tests are fast paced, and the timed element can add anxiety. As a successful tutor experienced in high school and middle school math, as well as general standardized test prep, I tutor the math portion of these exams. I help students by building skills and confidence; going over the most tested math concepts; and teaching strategies to lower anxiety and be prepared for the timed aspect of the test. Additionally I can help students organize their study for the other portions of the exam.
I enjoy working with youngsters, exploring the world of math and what it can do, building their skills and igniting that curiosity about the world around them and the all math applications that can be done. Whether you are looking for remedial help, or looking to advance a gifted child, I can help. I always have an eye towards building students’ confidence in the math at their level, but also preparing them for the math to come. I teach students WHY they are doing what they need to do, not just procedures and rules, to deepen and broaden their understanding of concept. In this way, skills are transferable, no matter how that skill is stretched or tested as the subject advances. I love talking to children about their world, hearing their questions, helping them discover the answers, and prodding them to more questions. Elementary science should initiate a curiosity and an enthusiasm, -- and I like to help them understand, --- so they can ask more questions! We can work from their textbook and worksheets, online materials, or come up with our own! My background in science (PhD in chemistry) qualifies me in science, but my ability to relate on their level makes me a good tutor. I have successfully helped students with the math portion of their GED. In addition to my tutoring, I volunteer weekly at a local learning center, and have worked with students of all levels towards their GED. I help raise skills and confidence for the online test, tailoring sessions to your needs. Whether you are of high school age or returning to studies after a long break, I can help. I've been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. Along with strengthening the fundamentals, I teach a way to read problems so you can consistently get the equation needed to be solved. I have helped many students overcome their stumbling blocks and anxieties, and make quick progress. I have had experience tutoring geometry and preparing students for the New York State Regents exam. Geometry can be difficult for many students, since the abstract nature of the subject, and the logical reasoning required, is very different from previous math study. Additionally, any weaknesses in algebra stymie students tremendously, since algebra is a mere tool used in geometry. I address all of this. I have been told I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. I tutor the math portions of the test - the quantitative section and integrated reasoning. We review necessary math skills, and strengthen fundamentals so you are equipped for the data sufficiency questions, and I give you the tools needed to quickly arrive at answers without the calculator. I teach a way to read the word problems to correctly set up the question being asked. We work on timing as well, making sure you are solving only enough of the problem to answer the question.
I have prepared students for the math portion of the revised general GRE test with much success. The math content is high school level, similar to that found on the SAT, but the question format differs and can be quite unnerving if you are not prepared. Unfamiliar question types include the quantitative comparisons, and questions where more than one answer is correct, - and you have to find them all. I work with students in several fronts. We review content; I teach students how to read word problems to set up the right equation; I detail a method for the quantitative comparisons that takes out some of the confusion; and we work for accuracy and completeness on questions. I offer Independent School Entrance Exam prep, specializing in math and test taking tips and strategies for this unique, timed test. In addition to reviewing the most-tested math concepts, the quantitative comparisons in the math section of the ISEE are unfamiliar to most students, so a particular concentration on these is included. My expertise in standardized test prep and successful math tutoring methods will ensure readiness and confidence for the ISEE student.
Physical science covers a variety of disciplines - offering an introduction to chemistry, physics, and may add elements of earth science/geology and astronomy among others. It is also usually the start of the scientific method - with detailed, methodical experiments. My background in science (PhD in chemistry) qualifies me in science, but my ability to relate to students of all levels makes me a good tutor. I have had much success helping students through pre-algebra. At this point in the math curriculum, the fundamentals to algebra are being introduced, as well as the beginning concepts in geometry. Being strong in these areas will set the stage for a good high school math experience.
It is important to address any difficulties before discouragement sets in. I have been told I can explain math concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. For grades that are weak or inconsistent, it is usually a combination of one or more of a few things: the new concepts may simply be difficult or not presented in a way the student cannot connect with; and any weaknesses in arithmetic (working with fractions or decimals, for example) are magnified as the course moves on from building the foundational skills to using those skills. I can help on both fronts.

I have helped many students achieve high scores on the math portion of the PSAT. Students who do not prepare are in danger of underperforming because: 1) they are not familiar with the question types and answer formats on the test, which can be quite different from school exams; 2) they are not used to the accuracy required for questions where there is no partial credit given; 3) they can be fazed by the fast paced, timed aspect of the test. I can help on all these fronts. We review all the math required for the test, as well as test taking tips and strategies. At the end of the year, students are under much pressure, and reviewing the content of an entire year of class material can be daunting. Furthermore, sections that a student was weak on when first covered won't get much easier without targeted help. Often small clarifications, or just being shown a concept in a different way, can help greatly. With a strong record of tutoring success in Algebra 1, Algebra 2 (with Trig), Geometry and Chemistry, I can help students successfully prepare for these Regents exams. I have helped many students prepare and raise their score on the math portion of the SAT. I concentrate on raising both skill and confidence for these tests - mostly by concentrating on the fundamental skills needed to answer the questions. I teach a method by which students can decipher the head-spinning word problems on the test, and make it easy to understand exactly what is being asked. Rather than just helping students solve any particular math problem, I always have my eye out for how the student is thinking, and where their difficulties are, allowing me to identify, and efficiently address, any underlying weaknesses. I have been told I can explain math concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. We also discuss the timing of the test, and strategies to maximize your score. I have had much success preparing students for the SSAT. I have been told, that with a patient manner, I can explain concepts in an easy to understand and easy to remember way. We review the foundational math concepts appropriate to the level test the student is taking. Depending on their grade and math background, some students may not yet have learned some of the required math for that level, and that can be unnerving! For most students, I can quickly introduce those concepts in a way that is immediately applicable. Additionally, students taking the Upper Level test sometimes need direction simplifying problems, as they are not allowed to use a calculator on the test, and some are not used to that restriction. Whatever the level, in addition to strengthening math skills, we review test taking strategies to maximize your score. The Test of Essential Academic Skills is used for admission to many nursing schools. It covers reading, mathematics, science and English and language usage. My main concentration is on the math section of the TEAS. Brushing up on math skills is essential for most test takers. Since a calculator is not permitted on this timed test, many students feel added pressure. I can help with strategies and skill building to help you arrive at the answers you need without relying on your calculator. In addition, I can identify your strengths and weaknesses in math to help you develop a plan to maximize your score. I have had extensive experience tutoring standardized math test preparation, and have helped many students. In addition, I hold a Ph.D. in Chemistry, and can help you work through test preparation materials in the science section as well.
