Wesleyan University (Mathematics)
I believe I have a special insight into mathematics, and I get a kick out of sharing those insights with others. I have successfully communicated those insights with others while tutoring on my own. I have tutored from Algebra 1 through Calculus, as well as the SAT. Mathematics is fundamental to so many other subjects that developing a deep understanding of it can impact what one decides to study in college, as well as the field one decides to work in. My preference is to deepen someone's understanding so the student will have more confidence to explore all that is out there. However, I have also successfully taught the English/History lovers who have no interest in a deeper understanding of math. I have a whiteboard with stand, magic markers and erasers, and engage the student by solving problems before me. We interact and discuss throughout the hour. The results I achieved have been very positive.
I have a B.A. in Mathematics from Wesleyan University, scored 800 on the Math SAT, and have tutored six students with great results. David was able to identify weaknesses in 'Heart of Algebra' with a diagnostic exercises. We are very pleased with the teaching and interactive communication. He arrives equipped with a white board. Relative homework assignments are given and feedback is encouraged.
David, goes well beyond the "session", by making himself available in between session, day and night! He is always ready to help in any way he can, and reaches out to the student frequent to make sure they are on track.
Dave is amazing. He worked patiently with my daughter. He asked a lot of her, but understood when she couldn't get all the work done. He helped her become self-sufficient in math, giving her confidence in her abilities. He gave her strategies on how to solve problems. He familiarized her with the types of problems she would encounter on the SSAT.
Although we've only had one lesson with David so far, I can't say enough about how amazingly flexible he is in working out a schedule that fits into my son's busy life. David followed up both before and after the session. We are very pleased so far! I am hoping that in time, David will be able to help my son wrap his head around calculus, and it will become less of a struggle for him!!
11/18/14 update: My son has had 3 sessions with David now and he is starting to feel optimistic about his upcoming pre-calculus test. David continues to be very flexible and seems truly concerned about helping Austin succeed. I can see that these tutoring sessions (done against my son's will - because he thought he didn't need help) are very beneficial already and I anticipate that with David's continued help, will reduce so much stress from my son trying to figure out this very complex stuff on his own. Thanks David!!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
