I am easily able to adapt my teaching style to the learning style of the student. For the past six years I have worked with elementary school students in grades 1-3, one-on-one, and have been so successful that teachers have asked for me to work with their students again in the following years. I am easily able to adapt my teaching style to the learning style of the student. For the past six years I have worked with elementary school students in grades 1-3, one-on-one, and have been so successful that teachers have asked for me to work with their students again in the following years. I have a great sense of humor and, though I am serious about improving students' reading ability and comprehension, I know that the student and I have more fun in the learning process if I don't treat everything so seriously that the student gets 'turned off'. Reading should be an enjoyable experience and I try very hard to carry that over to the children I've worked with.

I love to read. I love to teach others to read. Its the fundamental skill and means to enjoying books upon which most of life is based.
I was a general music/choral/piano teacher for close to 30 years. In graduate school I majored in Reading Education and I have been a trained volunteer tutor for about six years through a program called Children's Reading Partners. I have enjoyed all my teaching experience immensely. In all my teaching, even/especially as a music teacher I taught hundreds of kids to read music and to read the words to songs in their books, on posters, on song sheets etc. .

As a music teacher I taught students songs many times though their rhyming patterns. As a tutor I've done the same thing. Fun books such as those by Dr. Seuss are especially useful in getting students to anticipate rhyming schemes and they are then able to sound words out for themselves. I learned to read using phonics as did my own daughter - at a very early age! 'Sight'' words are very important but learning to figure out the pronunciation of a word by him/her self is so rewarding and a boost to the child's self-image.

When I taught music, we learned songs through word patterns and sentence structure, but learning the spelling of music terminology and composers' names correctly , for example, makes for a more educated person. throughout her/
