Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I've helped kids prepare for the SAT and ACT tests and they've done very well. I can help kids improve their speed and accuracy in answering the reading questions.

College Counseling

I have helped students research and apply to colleges. I have a good sense of the differences between many colleges and have visited approximately thirty colleges in the past two years.

My specialty is helping students with college essays. My background as an editor for the past thirty years helps give me the ability to improve students' work while letting their unique voice still speak.

My own sons are at the University of Chicago, one of the top universities in the United States. When they were accepted, the admissions officers commented on the excellence of their essays.

This past year I helped several students with all of their college applications, shepherding them through this complicated process. From analyzing each school for "fit" to assuring that each application adequately demonstrates interest, I helped these students present themselves at their best to increase the probability for acceptance. I look forward to helping more students with the college-admission process.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've worked with elementary school students for the past 15 years, helping my own children (now in college) with their homework and tutoring younger children in math and English skills.

I work in three different libraries and one private elementary school with children in 3rd-8th grade, primarily developing their math and vocabulary skills. From simple addition and subtraction, I continue into more complex math skills. The students learn how probability can influence decision-making, ways to solve basic word problems, and methods to solve problems more quickly. I also teach students how to use language correctly and effectively, both in sentence structure and in composing essays.

I like to include puzzles and games in my teaching, making the lesson entertaining for the student as well as educational. Scrabble, for example, can reinforce math skills and introduce vocabulary.

I have an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, and I have worked as an editor for over thirty years.

English

I have an MFA in English from the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, plus a BA from Hollins College, where I majored in a combination of English, Film, and Theater. I work as a writer and editor, so I have excellent experience in correcting faulty grammar and making writing more clear.

Grammar

I've worked in publishing for years as an editor, so I am an expert on correct grammar.

Proofreading

I've been an editor, copy editor, and proofreader for major publishing houses for over thirty years. I'm currently working freelance for many clients, including top PR firms in the metropolitan area.

Reading

I've worked helping students improve their reading skills for the past fifteen years.

SAT Reading

I have helped numerous students prepare for the SAT reading and writing sections, with excellent results. I help the students understand how to approach the various questions and avoid the traps set by the test. I also help students with the essay portion of the SAT so they are able to write a strong essay within the time constraints of the test.

SAT Writing

I have been helping students with the SAT Writing sections for many years with excellent results. I specialize in helping students with their essays.

Writing

A graduate of the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop, I have worked for many years as an editor and writer for major New York City publishing houses.

As a mother of triplets (now in college), I have helped students with reading and writing for years, and I have particular expertise in helping students with essays.

I have an MFA in creative writing.

Wonderful! Can't say enough positive things about her. Very helpful, understanding, and had working. She knows what she's talking about, and is all about helping her students. So happy I found her. She will be the reason I pass my senior thesis course.
