About Candace

Bio

My love for tutoring and homeschooling goes back to 1991 at a small school outside of Cleveland. I was a rookie elementary school teacher putting on mummy-wrapping ceremonies, studying children’s novels, and erecting classroom wigwams. Five years in, I decided it was time for night school. Seven years later, I emerged with two master’s degrees, one in Curriculum & Instruction and the other in English Literature.

By 2019, I had long put these degrees into practice as a secondary English and humanities teacher (grades 7-college), launching Advanced Placement English programs at two separate independent schools, and later teaching both composition and literature courses at the local state college where I also tutored in the writing center. Spending time helping individual students after school was nothing new. But it wasn’t until the onset of the pandemic that a few parents asked me to consider homeschooling their teenagers one-on-one. I would design my own curriculum, all the accompanying assessments and projects, and get it accredited. To this day, I relish thinking of better ways to advance the learning of one student at a time.

Having worked with all ages from across the globe gives me an edge in helping diverse learners at all levels of achievement and backgrounds. Teaching a variety of humanities subjects also makes me uniquely suited to help students with their reading and writing across the curriculum. Add to this my experience as a traditionally published writer and a freelance editor, and you might say that my toolbox is full. I regularly use active approaches to reading and learning—such as response journaling, annotating, and outlining—and emphasize the various stages of the writing process, from invention and brainstorming, to drafting and revision. My editorial clients and tutees alike benefit from my support, growing as writers and getting into their first-choice schools.

Approved Subjects

American History

American History

For three years, I created the curriculum for and taught American History at the middle-school level. In addition, I have tutored high school students in American History (as well as European history). As a classroom teacher, I covered most heavily the time of British Colonialism (Jamestown, etc.) through the Red Scare Era. In addition, my master's in English Literature focused intensely on American Literature, which requires an understanding of the relationship between works of literature and their social and historical contexts.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I have published multiple creative writing pieces in competitive literary journals, including Hopper Magazine and the Great Lakes Review. My piece, "Erie Lake," was nominated by the latter for "Best of the Net." I am also a freelance editor trained in both developmental and line editing of commercial and literary fiction.
Literature

Literature

I have a master's in English Literature and taught traditional middle and high-school English from 2000 until 2019. I developed and sought accreditation (with success) for AP English Language for an independent school in Colorado. Since 2006, I also taught English composition and Introduction to Literature, respectively, at the college level. To this day, I continue to tutor and homeschool students in these areas, which include rhetorical and literary analysis, argumentative essays, and research methods.
Personal Statements

Personal Statements

I taught junior and senior English for many years. Each fall, I included a unit on writing the personal statement for college admissions. I am also a freelance editor who has helped many clients develop their personal statements for private schools, undergraduate, and graduate studies. My clients report successful results in getting into their top choice schools.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

In my youth (1970s and 80s), I wanted to be a good student. I loved stories, yet could not tame my wild mind when reading. Unfortunately, no one knew about ADHD back then, and this meant accepting bad grades and the laying of a shoddy academic foundation. As I matured, I had to create approaches to reading attentively and with a critical eye. I determinedly chose a career that would demand the very thing I had struggled with. But trial and error led to success. Today, I am paid to do developmental and line editing for both academic and creative writers. And I help students read literature like a professor.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

Earning my two master's degrees demanded that I be able to write copiously and well, resulting in a nomination for the "Plain Dealer Award for Excellence in Writing." Honing my own skills allowed me to coach beginning writers from third grade through college. In addition, I am the author of three works of creative nonfiction published in highly selective literary journals and co-author of a book of film criticism (Rowman & Littlefield) and a chapter in an anthology (Suny) covering the films of Terrence Malick. In 2022, the editors of the Great Lakes Review nominated one of my pieces for "Best of the Net."
Social Studies

Social Studies

As a former middle-school teacher, I taught American History, which included topics related to the economy and a deep dive into Civics, civic responsibilities, government, and elections. One year, I also stepped in last minute to teach a Human Geography to 9th graders. Human Geography is a subject focusing on how people impact their natural and built worlds, and how these natural and built worlds in turn shape the development of human societies.
